Long Wait Over for England, Paul Drinkhall Crowned Champion in Spain

Impressive at the London 2012 Olympic Games, where he reached the fourth round of the Menís Singles event, Englandís Paul Drinkhall struck gold in Almeria on the evening of Sunday 6th April.

Occupying the no.22 seeded position in the draw, he emerged the somewhat the surprise winner of the Menís Singles event at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour Spanish Open.

At the final hurdle he overcame Japanís Masataka Morizono, the no.5 seed in six games (11-7, 11-9, 6-11, 11-5, 6-11, 11-8) to claim the title.....

Fairy Tale Ends for Miu Hirano, Experience Counts, Gold for Li Fen

Experienced counted, there was to be no fairy tale ending for Japanís Miu Hirano in the Womenís Singles event at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour Spanish Open in Almeria.

In the early evening of Sunday 6th April, the 13 year old was beaten by Swedenís Li Fen.

Crowned European champion in Shwechat, Austria in October 2013 and the no.4 seed, Li Fen overcame Liu Hirano, the no.19 seed in five games to secure the title (11-4, 6-11, 11-2, 11-3, 12-10).....

At the start of the year he was listed at no.112 on the Menís World Rankings, in fact that was the highest of his career; now he is named at no.37, he is also the Menís Doubles champion at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour Spanish Open.

Wong Chun Ting, a right handed athletic pen-hold grip attacking player who uses both sides of the racket in the modern mode, is the revelation of the year; his results outstanding, he has established himself in the Hong Kong first team.

In Almeria, late on the afternoon of Sunday 6th April, he won the Menís Doubles title in partnership with the more experienced Tang Pang; Wong Chun Ting is 22 years old, Tang Peng is 33 years of age.....

One week ago in Magdeburg at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour German Open, Miu Hirano and Mima Ito had given a stunning performance to become the youngest ever pairing the win an ITTF World Tour Womenís Doubles title.

Equally, they were younger that any counterpart male pairing that had won an ITTF World Tour Menís Doubles event.

A remarkable performance from two young ladies, both only 13 years old, surely such success could not repeated my players so young; would not greater maturity be needed in the heat of the international cauldron of battle?....

Outstanding Form Maintained, Paul Drinkhall Upsets Seeding to Reach Final

Never beyond the second round of a Menís Singles event on the ITTF World Tour and back in the international arena following an enforced absence owing to injury, Englandís Paul Drinkhall continued his outstanding form at the semi-final stage in Almeria at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour Spanish Open.

The 24 year old who had caused a string of upsets on the previous two days of play continued in that fashion on Sunday 6th April, the concluding day of action.

Occupying the no.23 seeded position in the draw, he caused a major upset by beating Japanís Yuto Muramatsu, the no.11 seed in five games (11-9, 11-6, 6-11, 13-11, 11-6).

Youngest Player Ever to Reach Final, Miu Hirano Continues to Astound

At the GAC Group 2013 ITTF World Tour Qatar Open, just over one year ago, we smiled with surprise as a 12 year old progressed to the third round of a the Womenís Singles event by beating Koreaís Lee Eunhee and Park Youngsook.

Now one year later we gaze in amazement as Japanís Miu Hirano becomes the youngest ever player to reach an ITTF World Tour Womenís Singles final.

On the morning of Sunday 6th April, she beat Germanyís Sabine Winter in seven games (14-12, 11-4, 9-11, 10-12, 5-11, 11-8, 11-4) to reach the ultimate round of the Womenís Singles competition at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour Spanish Open.....

Hungary Repeated, Romain Lorentz Sofia Polcanova Reign in Spain

Frenchman Romain Lorentz and Austriaís Sofia Polcanova won the respective Under 21 Menís Singles and Under 21 Womenís Singles titles at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour Spanish Open in Almeria on Saturday 5th April.

The no.3 seed, Romain Lorentz overcame Germanyís Benedikt Duda, the no.9 seed in the final (11-5, 8-11, 14-12, 8-11, 11-2, 7-11, 11-8); whilst Sofia Polcanova, the no.5 seed accounted for Britt Eerland of the Netherlands, the no.7 seed (10-12, 11-6, 9-11, 11-7, 8-11, 11-8, 11-8).

At the semi-final stage, Romain Lorentz had beaten Hong Kongís Lam Siu Hang who had been required to compete in the qualification group stage of affairs (11-9, 11-8, 11-7, 12-10).....
