Proud Tradition Maintained, Romanians Clinch French Cadet Titles

A celebrated past, one of the most successful nations in the history of the sport; the Romanian tradition looks set to continue.

Cristian Pletea and Andreea Dragoman won the respective Cadet Boys’ Singles and Cadet Girls’ Singles titles at the 2014 French Junior and Cadet Open on Sunday 9th March.

Both added to their medal haul in Metz; one day earlier Cristian Pletea had partnered Rares Sipos to Cadet Boys’ Team gold, whilst in harness with Mihaela Plaeasu, Andreea Dragoman had finished in runners up spot in the Cadet Girls’ Doubles competition.....

German Trio Upsets Seeding to Clinch Top Prize at French Junior and Cadet Open

A somewhat unexpected first place finish in the group stage of proceedings one day earlier, Germany ‘A’ maintained their form to emerge as the surprise winners of the Junior Girls’ Team title at the French Junior and Cadet Open in Metz on the evening of Saturday 9th March.

Led by Chantal Mantz with Alena Lemmer and Amelie Rocheteau in support, the seventh seeds ended French title hopes as they upset the seeding round by round.

The quest for gold on the penultimate day of action started with what was to prove their toughest contest of the whole campaign. ....

Top Prize for France, Host Nation Captures Metz Junior Boys’ Team Title

Success came the way of the host nation at the 2014 French Junior and Cadet Open in Metz on Saturday 8th March, with the top seeded trio of Can Akkuzu, Alexandre Cassin and Paul Gauzy winning the Junior Boys’ Team title.

At the final hurdle they overcame the second seeded Portuguese outfit comprising Diogo Chen, Jorge Costa and Antonio Malheiro by three matches to nil with every duel being secured in straight games.

Alexandre Cassin beat Diogo Chen (14-12, 11-7, 11-3) to give the France ‘A’ the perfect start before Can Akkuzu accounted for Jorge Costa (11-7, 11-7, 11-5) and Paul Gauzy brought matters to a conclusion by defeating Antonio Malheiro (11-8, 11-7, 11-5).....

Belgium Suffers as German Girls Upset Seeding to Reach Quarter-Finals

Germany emerged as the nation to attract the attention on the opening day of play, Friday 7th March, in the Junior Girls’ Team event at the 2014 French Junior and Cadet Open in Metz.

Represented by Chantal Mantz, Alena Lemmer and Amelie Rocheteau; Germany ‘A’ upset the seeding to reach the quarter-final stage of proceedings, as did the Germany ‘B’ Team trio comprising Wan Yan, Caroline Luisa Hajok and Anne Bundesmann.

Both caused the fifth seeded Belgium outfit formed by Lisa Lung, Eline Loyen and Margo Degraeff pain.....

Russians Lead Way, Junior Boys’ Team Event Realises Surprise Quarter-Finalists

Selecting from the quartet of Konstantin Chernov, Sadi Ismailov, Danila Travin and Andrey Popov; Russia ‘A’ caused the biggest upsets in the early stages of the Junior Boys’ Team event, on Friday 7th March, at the French Junior and Cadet Open in Metz.

It was a day when there was no lack of surprises.

In addition to Russia, the no.13 seeds, the combination of Germany’s Marcus Hilker and Nils Hohmeier in harness with Algeria’s Yaniss Douifi, the no.14 seeds, advanced to the quarter-finals; as did the Turkish outfit of Ozgun Ozturk, Ibrahim Gunduz, Ziver Gunduz and Batuhan Ulucak, the no.20 seeds.....

Defeat Two Days Earlier, Yin Jing Yuan Upsets Seeding to Capture French Title

Beaten by Padasak Tanviriyavechakul two days earlier at the semi-final stage of the Road to Nanjing Series Tournament, Singapore’s Yin Jing Yuan was the surprise winner of the Junior Boys’ Singles title at the ensuing French Junior and Cadet Open in Metz on Thursday 6th March.

Occupying the no.15 seeded position in the draw, ten days short of his 17th birthday, he accounted for the host nation’s Can Akkuzu, the top seed, in the final (12-10, 11-6, 6-11, 5-11, 11-9, 11-8), having earlier in the day caused a whole series of upsets.

In the third round, he beat Portugal’s Diogo Chen, the no.2 seed and winner earlier in the year in the Czech Republic (11-5, 11-13, 7-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-8), before causing the host nation chagrin.....

Serbian Final Avenged, Wan Yuan Clinches Junior Girls’ Singles Title in Metz

The fourth seed, Germany’s Wan Yuan emerged as the winner of the Junior Girls’ Singles event at the 2014 French Junior and Cadet Open in Metz on Thursday 6th March.

In so doing she won her first ever ITTF Junior Circuit Girls’ Singles title and gained an element of revenge.

It was her second appearance in a final, the previous occasion being in October 2013 when beaten in the gold medal contest by Romania’s Adina Diaconu in four straight games (11-8, 14-12, 11-9, 11-3).....
