Compensation for Wang Hao, Experience and Youth Combines to Clinch Title

Experience and youth combined to win the Menís Doubles title and close the curtains on the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour German Open in Magdeburg late on the afternoon of Sunday 30th March.

In a contest between two pairings who were not seeded and had been required to compete in the preliminary rounds of the event, Chinaís Lyu Xiang and Wang Hao overcame the partnership of Croatiaís Tan Ruiwu and Polandís Wang Zengyi, the reigning European champions, to secure the top prize.

They won in five games (13-11, 10-12, 11-4, 11-2).....

The host nation celebrated the success of Dimitrij Ovtcharov in securing the Menís Singles title at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour German Open in Magdeburg on the afternoon of Sunday 30th March; soon after they celebrated again.

Shan Xiaona won the Womenís Singles event with the number thirteen, in many parts of the World considered unlucky, proving the quite opposite for the German player.

Occupying the no.13 seeded position in the draw, she accounted for Koreaís Seo Hyowon, the top seed, to secure the title. ....

Third Consecutive Final, Dimitrij Ovtcharov Regains German Title

Crowned European champion some five months earlier, the host nationís Dimitrij Ovtcharov won the Menís Singles title at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour German Open in Magdeburg on the afternoon of Sunday 30th March.

The no.2 seed, at the final hurdle he beat Japanís Jun Mizutani, the no.6 seed, by the minimal two point margin in the deciding game to arrest the title (11-9, 5-11, 9-11, 11-5, 6-11, 11-2, 11-9).

It was the third successive year that Dimitrij Ovtcharov had appeared in the final of the tournament; she won in 2012 beating colleague, Timo Boll; one year ago he was beaten by Chinaís Fen Zhendong in the top place contest.....

The penultimate day of play at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour German Open in Magdeburg belonged to the host nationís Steffen Mengel; the win over Wang Hao, the former World champion in the third round of the Menís Singles event is now a part of his countryís sporting folklore.

Expecting the 25 year old to continue producing the incredible was asking too much; at the semi-final stage of the Menís Singles event on the concluding day of play, Sunday 30th March, the exploits of Steffen Mengel came to an abrupt close.

In his first ever international meeting with Japanís Jun Mizutani, the no.6 seed, the brave qualifier was beaten in four straight games (11-7, 11-5, 11-7, 11-2).....

Koreaís Seo Hyowon and the host nationís Shan Xiaona emerged successful in the semi-final encounters of the Womenís Singles event at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour German Open in Magdeburg on the morning of Sunday 30th March.

Both recorded impressive wins.

Seo Hyowon, the top seed, ended the brave run of Austriaís 19 year Sofia Polcanova, a player who had been required to compete in the qualification stage of proceedings; Seo Hyowon won in four straight games (11-4, 11-5, 12-10, 11-4).....

Unabated, the Steffen Mengel show continued at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour German Open in the city of Magdeburg on Saturday 29th March.

The player, who had started his campaign in the qualification stage of proceedings two days earlier, duly booked his place in the semi-final stage of the Menís Singles event.

En route he had been embroiled in full distance seven game matches in the group stage of proceedings, likewise he had been stretched to the very limit in the preliminary round and in the main draw it was no different; responding in the seventh game to secure victory was the norm.
