Golden Day for Austria, Daniel Habesohn Recovers to Secure Hungarian Crown

Never previously beyond the third round; Daniel Habesohn won the Menís Singles title at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour Hungarian Open in Szombathely on the afternoon of Saturday 1st February to complete the perfect day for Austria.

Earlier in the proceedings, colleague Liu Jia had recovered from a three games to one deficit to beat the host nationís Georgina Pota; soon after Daniel Habesohn followed suit.

He lost the first two games against Germanyís Steffen Mengel before winning the next four to secure a six games success (8-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-9, 11-5).....

Host Nation Hopes Dashed in Szombathely, Liu Jia Clinches Womenís Singles Crown

Crowned European champion in Aarhus in 2005, Austriaís Liu Jia won the Womenís Singles title at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour Hungarian Open in the city of Szombathely on the afternoon of Saturday 1st February.

In a dramatic final, occupying the no.3 seeded position in the draw, she beat the host nationís Georgina Pota, the no.4 seed, to clinch the top prize.

Liu Jia recovered from a three games to one deficit to post a full distance seven games victory (8-11, 11-13, 11-6, 3-11, 11-6, 11-8, 12-10) in a contest between two players had enjoyed illustrious teenage careers.....

German Progress Continues, Austrians Experience Mixed Emotions in Hungary

Not seeded, required to compete in the qualification stage of proceedings, Germanyís Steffen Mengel continued his path of destruction on the concluding day of play, Saturday 1st February, at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour Hungarian Open in the city of Szombathely.

In the battle of the 25 year olds with same first name pronunciation, he beat Austriaís Stefan Fegerl, the second seed, in five games (7-11, 11-3, 11-7, 11-9, 11-6), to climb one step higher than his previous best on the ITTF World Tour.

On Belgian soil in Antwerp in 2012, he reached the penultimate round of the Menís Singles event but progressed no further; on that occasion he was beaten in seven games by Chinese Taipeiís Huang Sheng-Sheng (7-11, 11-4, 8-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-2).....

Crowned Junior Girlsí Singles champion at the European Youth Championships in Moscow in 2002, Georgina Pota brought smiles to the faces of home supporters in the city of Szombathely on the morning of Saturday 1st February.

Occupying the fourth seeded position in the draw, she beat top seed, Li Jiao of the Netherlands in a tense seven games encounter (6-11, 11-2, 8-11, 2-11, 11-1, 11-7, 11-5) to book her place in the final of the Womenís Singles event at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour Hungarian Open.

An upset in the first semi-final, not in the second; Austriaís Liu Jia, the third seed, accounted for Romanian qualifier, Camelia Postoaca in four games (11-5, 7-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-8) to emerge successful in her penultimate round duel.....

Austrians Stefan Fegerl and Daniel Habesohn duly progressed as did Germanyís Steffen Mengel but for Frenchmen Emmanuel Lebesson it was the end of the journey; he was the next to suffer at the hands of the Slovak Republicís Wang Yang.

At the semi-final stage of the Menís Singles event at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour Hungarian Open in the city of Szombathely, on the evening of Friday 31st January, defensive skills caused the Frenchmanís downfall.

The fifth seed; he was beaten in four straight games (11-6, 11-8, 11-8, 11-8).....

Earlier Upsets but Womenís Singles Quarter-Finals Proceed According to Plan

Upsets had been plentiful on the third day of play, Friday 31st January, in the city of Szombathely but at the quarter-final stage of the Womenís Singles event at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour Hungarian Open, matters progressed according to plan.

World ranking, experience and history all combined to dictate the names of the winners.

The one surprise name to book a semi-final place was that of Romaniaís Camelia Postoaca. Not seeded, she had started her adventures on the first day of play in the qualification stage. However, her last eight victory was no surprise, the shock result had been one round earlier when beating colleague and second seed Elizabeta Samara (5-11, 13-11, 11-5, 3-11,9-11, 11-7, 11-7).....

Last Day of the Month Proves the Perfect Day for Sofia Polcanova

The last day of the month, it is the day that Austriaís Sofia Polcanova comes good.

On Saturday 30th November at the GAC Group 2013 ITTF World Tour Swedish Open in Stockholm, Sofia Polcanova won the Under 21 Womenís Singles title. She beat Britt Eerland of the Netherlands in the final.

Two months later on Friday 31st January, Sofia Polcanova emerged successful in the Under 21 Womenís Singles competition at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour Hungarian Open in Szombathely.....
