Now Four Days to Go: From Mediocrity to Major Championship Contenders

04/24/2014 ZEN-NOH 2014 World Team Table Tennis Championships,28 Apr 2014 - 05 May 2014, Tokyo , JPN

A decade ago at the Liebherr World Team Championships in Doha, Portugal finished in 34th place in the Men’s event; it meant that they were an average Second Division outfit, not likely to gain promotion to the Championship Division two years hence, not likely to be relegated to the tier below.

The fact was underlined in 2006, when the world met in the German city of Bremen, Portugal concluded matters in 31st place; again nothing startling but basically as predicted.

It was gradual progress and in 2008 at the Evergrande Real Eastate World Team Championships in the city of Guangzhou, the progress continued in a measured fashion, they climbed four places, the concluded matters in 27th place.....

Now Five Days to Go: Hong Trio Pressing Claim for Front Line Selection

04/23/2014 ZEN-NOH 2014 World Team Table Tennis Championships,28 Apr 2014 - 05 May 2014, Tokyo , JPN

A bronze medal was the end result for Hong Kong at the Liebherr 2012 World Team Championships in Dortmund; the trio comprising Tie Yana, Jiang Huajun and Yu Kwok See suffering defeat with an air of dignity and pride.

They were beaten by China but had the distinction of being the only outfit to extract a single match from the champions elect; in the second duel of the fixture Tie Yana beat Li Xiaoxia, who later in the year was to become Olympic champion and the following year World champion.

Now, at the forthcoming ZEN-NOH 2014 World Championships to be staged in Tokyo from Monday 28th April to Monday 5th May, if Hong Kong reached the same stage what would be the selection? ....

04/22/2014 ZEN-NOH 2014 World Team Table Tennis Championships,28 Apr 2014 - 05 May 2014, Tokyo , JPN

Name the men’s team for Korea and for almost a decade the names of Ryu Seungmin, Joo Saehyuk and Oh Sangeun, in whatever order the coach of the day decided, were virtually the automatic choice.

The only notable exception was in 2008 when, for whatever reason, Yoon Jaeyoung was preferred to Joo Saehyuk at the Beijing Olympic Games.

Now, at the forthcoming ZEN-NOH 2014 World Team Championships to be staged in Tokyo from Monday 28th April to Monday 5th May; for Yoo Namkyu, the Head Coach, there is no automatic selection.....

04/21/2014 ZEN-NOH 2014 World Team Table Tennis Championships,28 Apr 2014 - 05 May 2014, Tokyo , JPN

Six years ago at the Evergrande Real Estate 2008 World Team Championships, staged in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou from Sunday 24th February to Sunday 2nd March, England finished in first place in the Second Division of the Women’s event.

It meant that two years hence in Moscow, it was the Championship Division which beckoned; a place amongst the elite was not maintained. At the Liebherr 2012 World Team Championships in Dortmund it was a return to the tier below, the elation experienced in Guangzhou was not repeated.

Once again, at the forthcoming ZEN-NOH 2014 World Team Championships England competes in the Second Division, where they are one of the top four teams.....
