Tournament Ends with Home Win, German Crowd Leaves Berlin All Smiles

A total of 787 matches, 3,648 games and 67,176 points; the GAC Group 2013 ITTF World Tour German Open came to a conclusion on the late afternoon of Sunday 17th November on a high note for the host nation.

Partners in a major event for the first time, Timo Boll and Patrick Franziska combined to win the Menís Doubles title in a contest that brought proceedings in Berlinís Max-Schmeling-Hall to a fitting climax.

In dramatic contest they beat the Chinese Taipei partnership of Chiang Hung-Chieh and Huang Sheng-Sheng by the very narrowest of margins in the decisive fifth game to secure victory (11-8, 7-11, 8-11, 13-11, 12-10). ....

Second Title of Career, Second Title of Day, Wen Jia Wins in Berlin

Disappointment one week earlier when beaten by the champion elect, Koreaís Seo Hyowon, in the penultimate round in Spala; Chinaís Wen Jia laid the Polish ghosts to rest in Berlin on Sunday 17th November.

The no.20 seed, she beat Japanís Ai Fukuhara, the no.5 seed, in four straight games at the final hurdle (11-5, 11-6, 11-7, 11-5), to win her second career ITTF World Tour Womenís Singles title.

In so doing, she departed Berlin as the most successful player in the tournament. Earlier in the afternoon she had partnered Zhao Yan to Womenís Doubles success.....

The Winner in Poland, Fan Zhendong Repeats the Success in Germany

Crowned champion one week earlier in Poland, Fan Zhendong won the Menís Singles title at the GAC Group 2013 ITTF World Tour German Open on Sunday 17th November; thus he completed back-to-back wins.

In itself, that is an achievement few have accomplished but, to complete the achievement when only 16 years old, is staggering.

Occupying the no.5 seeded position, he beat the host nationís Dimitrij Ovtcharov, the no.3 seed, in the final in five games (13-11, 11-7, 6-11, 11-1, 11-9), in what was a contest between two players very much in form.....

Great Escape, Wen Jia and Zhao Yan Recover from the Precipice

Recovering from the very precipice of defeat, Chinaís Wen Jia and Zhao Yan won the Womenís Doubles title at the GAC Group 2013 ITTF World Tour German Open in Berlin on Sunday 17th November.

In a contest between two pairs who were not seeded and thus were required to compete in the preliminary rounds, Wen Jia and Zhan Yan kept the crowd in the Max-Schmeling-Halle on the very edges of their seats as they clawed their way back from seeming defeat.

They saved three match points in the third game to beat the Japanese duo of Ai Fukuhara and Misako Wakamiya in five games (3-11, 8-11, 15-13, 11-8, 11-7).....

Champion in Poland and Defending Champion Book Final Places

Winner of the most recent and the defending champion prevailed at the semi-final stage of the Menís Singles event at the GAC Group 2013 ITTF World Tour German Open in Berlin on Sunday 17th November.

Chinaís Fan Zhendong, crowned champion one week earlier Poland and occupying the no.5 seeded place in the draw, overcame Vladimir Samsonov of Belarus, the no.7 seed in six games (3-11, 11-2, 4-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-8), the incredibly powerful 16 year old maintaining the form that he had displayed one week earlier in the city of Spala.

Success for Fan Zhendong was followed by success for Dimitrij Ovtcharov, the no.3 seed and the winner one year earlier when the GAC Group 2012 ITTF World Tour German Open was held in the city of Bremen.....

Ai Fukuhara and Wen Jia Book Final Places in Berlin

Japanís Ai Fukuhara and Chinaís Wen Jia emerged successful at the semi-final stage of the Womenís Singles event at the GAC Group 2013 ITTF World Tour German Open in Berlin on the morning of Sunday 17th November.

Ai Fukuhara, the no.5 seed, overcame the host nationís Han Ying, the no.16 seed, in a hard fought seven games encounter (11-13, 5-11, 12-10, 11-8, 11-6, 8-11, 11-4), to be followed by Wen Jia, the no.20 seed, who ended the hopes of Hong Kongís Lee Ho Ching, the no.12 seed.

Wen Jia won in six games (12-10, 7-11, 12-10, 9-11, 11-7, 11-5).....

One High Note after Another, The Day Belongs to Lee Ho Ching

Against the odds, a place in the semi-finals of the Womenís Singles event secured, Hong Kongís Lee Ho Ching concluded the fourth day of play, Saturday 16th November, at the GAC Group 2013 ITTF World Tour German Open, on yet another high note.

She won the Under 21 Womenís Singles title; the third seed, she beat the host nationís Petrissa Solja, the no.6 seed in the final (11-9, 13-15, 11-5, 11-7, 9-11, 12-10), having at the quarter-final stage overcome Japanís Marina Matsuzawa (11-9, 11-5, 8-11, 11-7, 11-8) and Singaporeís Zhou Yihan, the no.13 seed, in the penultimate round (11-3, 9-11, 11-6, 7-11, 11-7, 5-11, 11-3).

It was the end of an exhausting day for the 20 year old.....
