Everything is Possible, for the Class of 2013 the Heights of Those from a Decade Earlier?

Staged in the northern Hungarian industrial town of Tiszaujvaros from Monday 10th to Sunday 16th June 2002, the prediction was that the winner of the Boys’ Singles event, a certain Zhang Jike, would find a place on the medal podium at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

He did not, he was not in the Chinese Team but it was a vital year in his career, it was the year we saw him emerge as a player of note on the ITTF World Tour; three years later he was World champion, four years later Olympic champion.

The prediction eventually came true and is that fact not one of the greatest motivators for the young players who competed in the recent ITTF World Cadet Challenge staged in the Slovenian town of Otocec from Saturday 26th October to Sunday 3rd November 2013?....

Triple Champions, Golden Days in Otocec for Wang Chuqin and Li Yiran

China’s Wang Chuqin and Li Yiran won the respective Boys’ and Girls’ Singles titles at the 2013 ITTF Cadet Challenge in Otocec, Slovenia on Sunday 3rd November and thus concluded the tournament as the most successful players of all.

Both collected a full house of titles available.

Earlier in the week, Wang Chuqin had secured gold in the Boys’ Team event, lining up in the Asian Team alongside Korea’s Hwang Minha, Japan’s Takuto Izumo and Hong Kong’s Kwan Man Ho. ....

Fair Play Awards for Australia and Brazil, an Education in Otocec

Australia’s Jake Duffy and Brazil’s Bruna Takahashi received the Fair Play awards at the medal ceremony on the closing day of action, Sunday 3rd November, at the 2013 ITTF Cadet Challenge in Otocec, Slovenia.

The awards reflect one of the goals of the competition; the education of promising young players to conduct themselves in manner that is a credit to the sport of table tennis.

Thankfully, the leading players in the world are of the highest integrity; they play hard, they strain every sinew to win but they play fairly, shake hands with their opponents and return to fight another day, against adversaries who have become friends.....

Top Seeds Book Final Places, Asia Assured of Full House at ITTF Cadet Challenge

The status quo prevailed in the morning session of play, on the concluding day of action, Sunday 3rd November, at the 2013 ITTF Cadet Challenge in the Slovenia town of Otocec.

In all four events on show, the top two seeds secured places in the finals. Furthermore, in all instances it was players from Asia who emerged successful; thus the continent which currently leads the world in the sport of table tennis will leave the south central European state with a full house of titles.

Earlier in the week Asia had clinched both the Cadet Boys’ Team and Cadet Girls’ Team titles.....

Top Seeds Book Semi-Final Places but Day Belongs to Hong Kong

Hong Kong celebrated, the early evening of the penultimate day, Saturday 2nd November, at the 2013 ITTF Cadet Challenge in Otocec, Slovenia belonged to the Special Administrative Region of China.

Kwan Man Ho, the no.10 seed, booked his place in the Boys’ Singles semi-final; Mak Tze Wing did exactly the same in the counterpart Girls’ Singles event.

The win recorded by Kwan Man Ho was not a major upset; he beat Argentina’s Horacio Cifuentes, the no.14 seed, in four straight games (11-7, 12-10, 11-5, 15-13) and thus repeated the straight games success he had enjoyed just over a month ago, when the pair had met on the ITTF Junior Circuit in Brazil.....

Mak Tze Wing Returns to Form, Earlier Troubles Set Aside, Last Eight Place Reserved

Second place in the first stage group as a result of a surprise defeat by Brazil’s Bruna Takahashi, Hong Kong’s Mak Tze Wing returned to form in the first round of the Girls’ Singles event at the 2013 ITTF Cadet Challenge in the Slovenian city of Otocec on Saturday 2nd November.

The no.6 seed, the 15 year old, beat Puerto Rico’s Adriana Diaz, the no.7 seed, to book her place in the second round of proceedings.

Impressively, Mak Tze Wing recorded a five games success (14-12, 9-11, 11-9, 11-3, 11-4).....

Surprise Quarter-Finalists; Flags of Argentina, Hong Kong and Slovenia Fly High

Argentina’s Horatio Cifuentes, Hong Kong’s Kwan Man Ho and the host nation’s Darko Jorgic were the players to catch the eye, as matters progressed to the quarter-final stage of the Boys’ Singles event at the 2013 ITTF Cadet Challenge in the Slovenian city of Otocec on Saturday 2nd November.

Against the odds, all three had finished their first stage matches in first position in their respective groups; eight groups in the initial phase of proceedings, Kwan Man Ho is the no.10 seed, Darko Jorgic is one place lower with Horacio Cifuentes being the no.14 seed.

One day later all three maintained their momentum to secure first round victories.....
