Kim Hyok Bong and Kim Jong Return Home National Heroes After Paris Triumph

Success for Kim Hyok Bong and Kim Jong in the Mixed Doubles event at the recently concluded LIEBHERR World Championships in Paris has made the duo national heroes.

It was only the third time since the Table Tennis Association of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea was formed in 1956 that the country had won a gold medal at a World Championships; the other occasions came in 1975 in Calcutta and in 1977 in Birmingham when Park Yung Sun won the Women’s Singles event.

The result of the success was that when Kim Hyok Bong and Kim Jong returned home, there was a state welcome.....

LIEBHERR World Championships: the Long and Short of the Score in Paris

The record books are quite clear and are now in the annals of history.

At the LIEBHERR World Championships which concluded in Paris on Monday 20th May 2013, Zhang Jike retained his Men’s Singles titles, whilst Li Xiaoxia claimed the Women’s Singles crown; for the first time ever, the both reigning Olympic champions became World champions.

Furthermore, Guo Yue and Li Xiaoxia won the Women’s Doubles title for the third consecutive time; whilst for the first time in a decade, China did not complete a clean sweep of titles. Chinese Taipei’s Chen Chien-An won the Men’s Doubles event, whilst the top step of the Mixed Doubles podium was reserved for DPR Korea’s Kim Hyok Bong and Kim Jong.....

Elected members of the International Table Tennis Federation in 1983, after 30 years of trying, Chinese Taipei finally secured a gold medal at a World Championships.

On Sunday 19th May 2013, Chen Chien-An and Chuang Chih-Yuan upset the formbook to win the Men’s Doubles title at the LIEBHERR World Championships in Paris.

A landmark victory, the duo returned home as heroes and as a result of their outstanding success in the French capital, they have new a new found status, new roles and new responsibilities.

They are to promote tourism in Chinese Taipei.

The dust has settled, the LIEBHERR World Championships have concluded, winners of the respective Men’s and Women’s Singles events being China’s Zhang Jike and Li Xiaoxia.

Both are players who dazzled with their excellence and both are players whose efforts will live long in the memory; both are inscribing their names indelibly in the history books of sport.

Zhang Jike yet again he proved himself the man who for the big occasion; his well-honed legs enabling him to execute a tirade of top spin strokes.

Vladimir Samsonov Receives Swaythling Club Fair Play Award in Paris

Presented by the Swaythling Club International, the Richard Bergmann Fair Play Trophy at the LIEBHERR World Championships was awarded to Vladimir Samsonov of Belarus.

The award was first made in 1967 to Sweden’s late Kjell Johansson.

It is made to a player who displayed the true credentials of sportsmanship at the Championships and keeps alive the name of one of the legends of the sport, Richard Bergmann.

Born in Vienna on Thursday 10th April 1919, Richard Bergmann competed in 13 World Championships; he made his debut in Prague in 1936 and bid farewell in Stockholm in 1957. Sadly he passed away on Sunday 5th April 1970.....
