Croatia’s Tan Ruiwu and Hungary’s Szandra Pergel emerged as the respective Men’s and Women’s Singles champions at the ITTF Euro-Africa Circuit Zagreb Open on Sunday 27th May.

The win recorded by Tan Ruiwu was as status predicted; but the success gained by Szandra Pergel was against the odds.

Again Causing Surprises, Romain Lorentz Upsets Seeding in Zagreb

The surprise winner of the Boys’ Singles title at the ITTF Cadet Challenge in the Swedish city of Helsingborg in November 2008, some three and half years later, Romain Lorentz was once again causing surprises.

On Saturday 26th May 2012, the no.13 seed, he caused the major upset of the day by beating the host nation’s Tomislav Kolarek at the quarter-final stage of the Men’s Singles event at the Euro-Africa Circuit Zagreb Open.

Seeds Fall, No Penultimate Round Place for Top Four Names

The winner one week earlier in Minsk, Russia’s Polina Mikailova booked her place in the semi-final stage of the Women’s Singles event at the Euro-Africa Circuit Zagreb Open, following series of fine performances on Saturday 26th May 2012.

At no stage of the proceedings was the no.5 seed extended the full seven games distance.

On duty for Belgium at the Volkswagen World Junior Championships in Bahrain last November, 18 year old Robin Devos was the star turn on the second day of play, Friday 25th May 2012 at the ITTF Euro-Africa Circuit Zagreb Open.

In the Men’s Singles event, he was the one player to cause an upset of note; he beat Croatia’s Tomislav Zubcic, the no.8 seed in seven games (6-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-5, 9-11, 10-12, 11-3) to book his place in the second round of proceedings.

Mateja Jeger and Elena Dubkova Stand Firm but Seeds Crash in Final Quest

The host nation’s 17 year old Mateja Jeger and 20 year old Elena Dubkova of Belarus stood firm on Friday 25th May 2012 but for the other leading names in the Under 21 Women’s Singles event at the ITTF Euro-Africa Circuit Zagreb Open, there was no place in the semi-finals.

Teenagers Make Presence Felt on Opening Day in Croatia

Success on the ITTF Junior Circuit in the first five months of the year; on the first day of play, Thursday 24th May 2012, at the ITTF Euro Africa Circuit Zagreb Open, it was also success.

In the qualification stage of the Women’s Singles event, the host nation’s Lea Rakovac and Ivana Tubikanec, in addition to Marina Berho of France, made fine starts to their campaigns in an effort to secure places in the main draw.

Nandor Ecseki Excels Expectations to Cause First Round Zagreb Upset

A semi-finalist in the Boys’ Singles event at the Hungarian Cadet Open in Tata in 2011, Nandor Ecseki was the player to cause the major upset, as play began in the qualification stage of the Men’s Singles event at the ITTF Euro-Africa Circuit Zagreb Open on Thursday 24th May 2012.

Now 15 years old and no longer in the cadet ranks, on his one and only visit to the table, he excelled expectations to beat the more experienced 27 year old Aleksandr Kuchuk from Belarus.
