Top Seeds Secure Titles at Final World Olympic Qualification Tournament

Surprises abounded over the four days of play at the Final World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Doha but when matters concluded on Sunday 13th May 2012, it was the top seeds who emerged as champions.

Portugalís Tiago Apolonia won the Menís Singles title, securing victory in the battle of the Iberian Peninsula by beating Spainís Carlos Machado in the final.

Meanwhile, in the counterpart Womenís Singles gold medal contest, it was success for Swedenís Matilda Ekholm; she overcame the Czech Republicís Dana Hadacova.....

A New Chapter Imminent for Latvia, Matiss Burgis Rises to Doha Challenge

Runner up in 2007 in the Junior Boysí Singles event at the French Junior and Cadet Open, now 22 years old, Latviaís Matiss Burgis can start to make preparations to travel to London later this year.

Subject to official confirmation and ratification by the Latvian National Olympic Committee, the victory recorded against the Czech Republicís Dmitrij Prokopcov on the afternoon of Sunday 13th May 2012, has gained the young man from the Baltic States a place in the Menís Singles event at 2012 Olympic Games.

He beat Dmitrij Prokopcov in six games (11-6, 9-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-8, 12-10).....

Top seed in the Womenís Singles event at the Final World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Doha, Swedenís Matilda Ekholm duly booked her place in the final.

She recorded a penultimate round success over Galia Dvorak on the morning of Sunday 13th May 2012.

Success for Sweden but the concluding day of play proved a step too far for Spain.

In the counterpart semi-final, there was defeat for Sara Ramirez. She was beaten by the Czech Republicís Dana Hadacova,....

Spain was the country with the greatest cause for celebration, as matters came to a close on a tension packed third day of play, Saturday 12th May 2012, at the Final World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Doha.

Carlos Machado brought the second round of the Menís Singles event to a close by beating Great Britainís Paul Drinkhall in a full seven games distance duel (11-5, 9-11, 11-6, 11-7, 8-11, 6-11, 11-5).

One hour later colleagues Galia Dvorak and Sara Ramirez followed suit, both living on the proverbial knife-edge.....

A reaction block, lightning anticipation, secured victory for Tiago Apolonia in his second round Menís Singles duel against Ukraineís Kou Lei, at the Final World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Doha on the afternoon of Saturday 12th May 2012.

Furthermore, the win is surely sufficient to have booked Portugal a place in the Menís Team event at the forthcoming London 2012 Olympic Games.

Pending final ratification, the trio of Tiago Apolonia, Marcos Freitas and Jo„o Monteiro will be on duty in the spacious ExCel Arena later this year in July.....

Nothing Certain but for Lee Ho Ching London Lights Shine Ever Brighter

Success for Lee Ho Ching, in opposition to Russiaís Oxana Fadeeva, greatly enhanced her chances of being present in the ExCel Arena in the docklands area of London, for the Womenís Team event at the forthcoming Olympic Games.

In the second round of the Womenís Singles event at the Final Olympic Qualification Tournament in Doha on Saturday 12th May 2012, the teenager displayed a high level of control, balance and mental fortitude, to record a four straight games win over the more experienced 27 year old Russian.

Lee Ho Ching won 11-7, 11-4, 11-6, 13-11.
