Host Nation Challenge Repelled, Russia Captures Major Titles in Minsk

Russiaís Vasily Lakeev and Polina Mikhailova won the respective Menís and Womenís Singles titles at the Belarus Open in Minsk on Sunday 20th May 2012, the first ever tournament to be staged on the newly inaugurated ITTF Euro Africa Circuit.

Vasily Lakeev, the no.5 seed, overcame compatriot Mikhail Paykov, the no.2 seed, in the Menís Singles final in five games (9-11, 11-1, 11-6, 11-9, 11-7) to secure the title.

Meanwhile, at the same stage in the Womenís Singles event, Polina Mikhailova, the no.1 seed, beat the host nationís Aleksandra Privalova, the no.2 seed (11-5, 11-5, 6-11, 11-9, 11-2). ....

Seeds Fall, Surprise Menís Singles Semi-Finalists in Belarus

Defeat one day earlier in the opening round of the Menís Singles event at the ITTF Euro-Africa Circuit Belarus Open in Minsk, for the top seed, the host nationís Pavel Platonov, a further three seeds suffered surprise defeats as matters progressed towards the semi-final stage on Saturday 19th May 2012.

Bulgariaís Stanislav Golovanov, the no.3 seed; Russiaís Viachaslev Burov the next in line and the host nationís Vitaly Nekhvedovich, the no.7 seed, all suffered defeats.

All departed at the hands of qualifiers with Japanís Mizuki Oikawa being the player to steal the show.....

Japanís Mizuki Oikawa and the host nationís Alina Arlouskaya were the shock winners of the respective Under 21 Menís and Under 21 Womenís Singles titles at the ITTF Euro Africa Circuit Belarus Open in Minsk on Saturday 19th May 2012.

Neither seeded, both secured the top prize without ever being extended the full distance at any stage of proceedings.

It is for both players a major step forward; Mizuki Oikawa has no current World ranking, whilst 16 year old Alina Arlouskaya occupies the no.182 spot on the Under 21 Womenís World Rankings.....

Top Seed Falls, Arseniy Gusev Causes Major First Round Upset in Minsk

No World ranking and no previous international success of note, Russiaís 20 year old Arseniy Gusev caused the biggest upset, not only of the second dayís play, Friday 18th May 2012, at the ITTF Euro-Africa Circuit Belarus Open but of the whole tournament.

He ousted the top seed, the host nationís Pavel Platonov in four straight games in the opening round of the Menís Singles event (11-6, 11-8, 11-9, 11-6).

The Russian, who also progressed to the quarter-finals of the Under 21 Menís Singles event by beating Israelís Michael Tauber (11-6, 4-11, 11-4, 18-16). ....

Russian Progress Underlined at Euro Africa Circuit Belarus Open

One step then another step and one more; that has been the story for Russiaís 15 year old Daria Chernova on the ITTF Junior Circuit in 2012.

At the Czech Junior and Cadet Open in February she reached the semi-final stage of the Cadet Girlsí Singles event, one week later in Sweden at the Safir International, she was the runner up; most recently, just under one week ago, she was the winner in Spain.

Consistent progress and that fact was underlined in the Womenís Singles event at the ITTF Euro Africa Circuit Belarus Open in Minsk on Friday 18th May 2012.....

ITTF Junior Circuit Form Maintained on Euro Africa Circuit Inauguration Day

Germanyís Yuko Imamura and Theresa Kraft plus Russiaís Daria Chernova, all players who have excelled on the ITTF Junior Circuit this year, made fine starts to their campaigns at the Belarus Open in Minsk on Thursday 17th May 2012; the first ever tournament on the newly constituted ITTF Euro-Africa Circuit.

All three remained unbeaten in the qualification stage of the Womenís Singles event and thus greatly enhanced their chances of gaining a place in the main draw.

A total of 12 places are available for qualifiers to join the four direct entries in the main draw. ....

Seeking a Top Two Place to Keep Hopes Alive in Belarus Capital

A top two finish is the target for players in the qualification stage of the Menís Singles event at the inaugural ITTF Euro Africa Circuit tournament, which commenced in the Belarus capital city of Minsk on Thursday 17th May 2012.

Eight players have received a direct entry to the main draw with the host nationís Pavel Platonov being the top seed followed by Russiaís Mikhail Paykov; a total of 24 places are available for the players in the first phase of proceedings with first or second place in each of the 12 groups guaranteeing progress to the main draw.

On the first day of action, the notable names all succeeded.....
