Host Nation Challenge Repelled, Russia Captures Major Titles in Minsk |

2012 ITTF EURO AFRICA CIRCUIT, Belarus Open,17 May 2012 - 20 May 2012, Minsk, BLR
Russia’s Vasily Lakeev and Polina Mikhailova won the respective Men’s and Women’s Singles titles at the Belarus Open in Minsk on Sunday 20th May 2012, the first ever tournament to be staged on the newly inaugurated ITTF Euro Africa Circuit.
Vasily Lakeev, the no.5 seed, overcame compatriot Mikhail Paykov, the no.2 seed, in the Men’s Singles final in five games (9-11, 11-1, 11-6, 11-9, 11-7) to secure the title.

Seeds Fall, Surprise Men’s Singles Semi-Finalists in Belarus |

Defeat one day earlier in the opening round of the Men’s Singles event at the ITTF Euro-Africa Circuit Belarus Open in Minsk, for the top seed, the host nation’s Pavel Platonov, a further three seeds suffered surprise defeats as matters progressed towards the semi-final stage on Saturday 19th May 2012.
Bulgaria’s Stanislav Golovanov, the no.3 seed; Russia’s Viachaslev Burov the next in line and the host nation’s Vitaly Nekhvedovich, the no.7 seed, all suffered defeats.

Japan’s Mizuki Oikawa and the host nation’s Alina Arlouskaya were the shock winners of the respective Under 21 Men’s and Under 21 Women’s Singles titles at the ITTF Euro Africa Circuit Belarus Open in Minsk on Saturday 19th May 2012.
Neither seeded, both secured the top prize without ever being extended the full distance at any stage of proceedings.
It is for both players a major step forward; Mizuki Oikawa has no current World ranking, whilst 16 year old Alina Arlouskaya occupies .... |

Top Seed Falls, Arseniy Gusev Causes Major First Round Upset in Minsk |

No World ranking and no previous international success of note, Russia’s 20 year old Arseniy Gusev caused the biggest upset, not only of the second day’s play, Friday 18th May 2012, at the ITTF Euro-Africa Circuit Belarus Open but of the whole tournament.
He ousted the top seed, the host nation’s Pavel Platonov in four straight games in the opening round of the Men’s Singles event (11-6, 11-8, 11-9, 11-6).

Russian Progress Underlined at Euro Africa Circuit Belarus Open |

One step then another step and one more; that has been the story for Russia’s 15 year old Daria Chernova on the ITTF Junior Circuit in 2012.
At the Czech Junior and Cadet Open in February she reached the semi-final stage of the Cadet Girls’ Singles event, one week later in Sweden at the Safir International, she was the runner up; most recently, just under one week ago, she was the winner in Spain.

Germany’s Yuko Imamura and Theresa Kraft plus Russia’s Daria Chernova, all players who have excelled on the ITTF Junior Circuit this year, made fine starts to their campaigns at the Belarus Open in Minsk on Thursday 17th May 2012; the first ever tournament on the newly constituted ITTF Euro-Africa Circuit.
All three remained unbeaten in the qualification stage of the Women’s Singles event and thus greatly enhanced their chances of gaining a place in the main draw.
