Winner of the Men’s Singles event at the ITTF Pro Tour Grand Finals in Stockholm in 2003, a feat achieved prior to ever winning a title at an open international tournament that formed part of the Tour, Chinese Taipei’s Chuang Chih-Yun once again enjoyed the sweet smell of success on Sunday 22nd April 2012.
He won the Men’s Singles crown at the GAC GROUP 2012 ITTF World Tour Spanish Open in Almeria.

Runner up in the Under 21 Women’s Singles event one day earlier; on Sunday 22nd April it was the same fate for Yang Ha Eun at the GAC GROUP 2012 ITTF World Tour Spanish Open in Almeria.
She was beaten in the final of the Women’s Singles event by her compatriot, the much more experienced 34 year old Kim Kyung Ah.
In the classic contest at the attacker versus the defender it was the latter who prevailed.
Kim Kyung Ah won in five games (11-4, 12-10, 11-8, 9-11, 11-6) to collect.... |

Disappointment earlier in the day losing a close seven games semi-final duel against Chinese Taipei’s Chung Chih-Yuan, it was better news for Japan’s Jun Mizutani later in the day on Sunday 22nd April 2012 at the GAC GROUP 2012 ITTF World Tour Spanish Open in Almeria.
He partnered Kenji Matsudaira to success in the final of the Men’s Doubles event.
Seeded no.3, the pair beat the top seeded Singaporean outfit of Yang Zi and Zhan Jian at the final hurdle. They won 11-4, 11-5, 7-11, .... |

Winners of the Women’s Doubles title at the KAL Cup Pro Tour Grand Finals in Seoul in December 2010; Korea’s Kim Kyung Ah and Park Mi Young repeated that success on the afternoon of Sunday 22nd April 2012 in the southern Spanish city of Almeria.
Seeded no.2 they won the Women’s Doubles title at the GC GROUP 2012 ITTF World Tour Spanish Open and justified their high status in the draw.

Seven games full distance contests in both Women’s Singles semi-finals at the GAC GROUP 2012 ITTF World Tour Spanish Open in Almeria on the morning of Sunday 22nd April; it was the same scenario in the ensuing Men’s Singles penultimate round matches.
Both went the full seven games distance.
Furthermore both resulted in surprises wins; that is according to statistics, according to seeding.

Success came the way of Korea at the semi-final stage of the Women’s Singles event at the GAC GROUP ITTF World Tour Spanish Open on the morning of Sunday 22nd April with both Yang Ha Eun and Kim Kyung Ah emerging successful.
Seeded no.11, Yang Ha Eun beat the host nation’s Shen Yanfei, the no.16 seed (9-11, 3-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-8, 11-7); whilst Kim Kyung Ah, the no.6 seed, overcame Japn’s Kasumi Ishikawa, the no.2 seed, 15-13, 11-7, 8-11, 10-12, 11-5, 8-11, 12-10).

Beaten by Singapore’s Wu Zhikang in the first stage of the Men’s Singles event but then in the first round causing Japan’s Kenji Matsudaira problems by extending the eleventh seed to six games, Korea’s Kim Dong Hyun improved as the matters progressed in the GAC GROUP 2012 ITTF World Tour Spanish Open.
Nowhere more so was that improvement more apparent than in the Under 21 Men’s Singles event.
On the evening of Saturday 21st April, he struck gold.
