Turning Up the Heat in Latin America, the Guadalajara Experience

It was hot, very hot; that is the abiding memory of the first Latin American Championships to be prefixed by the initials of the International Table Tennis Federation; the complete programme of events, which included qualification for the Pan American Games, coming to a close on Tuesday 31st May 2011.

The heat, it came in two dimensions.

There was the intense heat in terms of temperature, with the Mexican city of Guadalajara realising temperatures that had not been witnessed in the present century and there was the heat of competition.....

Rheann Chung and Dexter St Louis Adapt to Book Pan American Places

Good players adapt but for two players competing in the Qualification Tournament for the Pan American Games, they had to adapt more than anyone else.

Dexter St Louis and Rheann Chung are from Trinidad and Tobago but they reside for the majority of the year in France; they live in Bordeaux; Dexter plays in the French League for CAM Bordeuax, whilst Rheann represents Poitiers.

Playing in Guadalajara is far different from competing in the French League but both adapted to competing in the Mexican city and both succeeded in gaining one of the last two places available to qualify for the singles events at the Pan American Games to be staged in Guadalajara in October.....

Exultation and Exhaustion, at Last Good News for Alex Echavarria

Colombia’s 26 year old Alex Echavarria sank to the floor; he lay prone in exultation and exhaustion.

In the intense heat of Guadalajara, early in the afternoon of Tuesday 31st May 2011, he had beaten a most worthy opponent in the guise of Puerto Rico’s 17 year old Daniel Gonzalez to book his place in the Men’s Singles event at the Pan American Games to be held in the same city later in the year in October.

He withstood a spirited fight back by the Puerto Rican to win 9-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-7, 5-11, 6-11, 12-10.....

A Good Morning for Puerto Rican Girls in Guadalajara

It was success for Puerto Rico, success for Jerica Marrero and Carelyn Cordero, as they booked places in the Women’s Singles event at the Pan American Games on the morning of Tuesday 31st May 2011 in Guadalajara.

Following success against Andrea Hoppert of Honduras one day earlier (11-7, 12-10, 11-8, 9-11, 11-3), Jerica Marrero became involved in two titanic struggles to book her place in the main draw.

She overcame Trinidad and Tobago’s Rheann Chung (4-11, 11-6, 12-14, 8-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-9) before recovering from a three games to nil deficit to overcome Argentina´s Ana Codina (9-11, 11-13, 3-11, 11-9, 11,7, 11-8, 11-8).....

New President and New Approach for Latin American Table Tennis Union

Two World Championships, four Pan American Games, four Central American Games, four South American Games and two Bolivarianos Games; Venezuela’s Oswaldo Borges gained the recognition of being his country’s “Volleyball Player of the Twentieth Century”.

Unfortunately an Olympic Games appearance proved elusive.

Venezuela came close but qualification never materialised and in 1989, encouraged by fellow countryman, the renowned coach Pancho Seijas, Oswaldo Borges turned his attentions from Volleyball to Table Tennis.....

The Coach, the Greatest Hero of All, as Chile Book Pan American Place

Marcos Nuñez was on his feet applauding.

He hugged Felipe Olivares after the 19 year old had beaten Peru’s Fernando Inca on Tuesday 30th May 2011, to secure the very last place available in the Men’s Team event at the table tennis competitions in the forthcoming Pan American Games in October.

Chile secured a three-two win in what was a tension packed contest, the victory concluded the Men’s Team qualification progress for the Pan American Men’s Team event with the United States having some 20 minutes earlier recorded a three-one victory over Puerto Rico.....

Final Places Determined for Women’s Team Event at Pan American Games

Colombia and Peru secured the two remaining places available for the Women’s Team event at the Pan American Games to be staged in Guadalajara in October 2011.

On the morning of Saturday 30th May, also in Guadalajara but not in the venue that will be used for the table tennis events at the Pan American Games, Colombia overcame Puerto Rico and Peru defeated Argentina to book their places in the prestigious quadrennial multi-sport event.

Represented by Paula Medina, Johana Araque and Luisa Zuluaga, Colombia recorded a three-one victory against Puerto....
