Gustavo Tsuboi Turns the Tables, Extracts Revenge and Secures Gold

Defeat in the group stage at the hands of Marcelo Aguirre on the opening day of play, Brazil’s Gustavo Tsuboi came out all guns blazing when the two met again in the final of the Men’s Singles event at the ITTF/Latin American Cup in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday 19th March 2011.

Motivated with the thought of a place in the Liebherr Men’s World Cup to be staged in Paris later in the year in November and with passionate support from the crowd in the Maracanăzinho Indoor Arena, Gustavo Tsuboi posted a four straight games victory.

He won 11-5, 11-7, 11-5, 11-6.

Wu Xue Wins in Rio de Janeiro and Now Eyes Singapore

The Dominican Republic’s 30 year old Wu Xue won the Women’s Singles title at the inaugural ITTF/Latin American Cup in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday 19th March 2011 beating Mexico’s Yadira Silva in what was a repeat of their final at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico earlier in the year in August.

On that occasion Wu Xue won in five games; in the splendid surroundings of the Maracanăzinho Indoor Arena, she succeed in an even more emphatic style recording a four straight games victory.

Success Against Traditional Rivals but Mixed Fortunes for Brazil

It was mixed fortunes for the host nation at the semi-final stage of the Men’s Singles event at the ITTF/Latin American Cup in the Maracanăzinho Indoor Arena in Rio de Janeiro on the afternoon of Saturday 19th March 2011.

Gustavo Tsuboi emerged successful but it was defeat for Cazuo Matsumoto. Cazuo Matsumoto was beaten by Paraguay’s Marcelo Aguirre after Gustavo Tsuboi had upset the odds by overcoming Argentina’s second seeded, Liu Song.

Victory for Gustavo Tsuboi came by the seven game margin of 11-4, 11-9, 11-9, 4-11, 5-11, 11-13, 11-8; whilst for Marcelo Aguirre he succeeded in five games; he won 11-8, 11-4, 4-11, 11-9, 11-8.....

Experience Counts as Wu Xue and Yadira Silva Book Final Places

The Dominican Republic’s Wu Xue, the no.1 seed, and Mexico’s Yadira Silva, the no.4 seed, were the two players to emerge successful at the semi-final stage of the Women’s Singles event at the ITTF/Latin American Cup in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday 19th February 2011.

Wu Xue beat Paula Medina in six games (8-11, 11-8, 5-11, 11-5, 11-7, 12-10) before Yadira Silva overcame Brazil’s Jessica Yamada in a full distance seven games duel (7-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-5, 11-0).

Both semi-finals were hard fought duels and both followed a very similar path. ....

Shock Result in Rio de Janeiro but History Suggests Otherwise

Jessica Yamada, 21 years old, from the Itaim Keiko Club in Săo Paulo caused the biggest upset at the quarter-final stage of the Women’s Singles event when she beat 30 year old Ligia Silva, the no.2 seed and for the past decade Brazil’s leading female player, in a tension packed seven games duel.

In a contest that captivated the crowd in the Maracanăzinho Indoor Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Jessica Yamada kept her nerve at the crucial stage of proceedings to secure victory.

She won 11-13, 11-6, 11-7, 9-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-8.....

First Place for Second Placed First Stage Men in Rio de Janeiro

The first two quarter-final duels in the Men’s Singles event at the ITTF/Latin American Cup in the Maracanăzinho Indoor Arena in Rio de Janeiro on Friday 18th March 2011 saw four totally different styles of play in action.

Argentina’s Liu Song faced the Dominican Republic’s Lin Ju, whilst on the adjacent table an all Brazilian affair saw Hugo Hoyama face Gustavo Tsuboi. Victory went to Gustavo Tsuboi and Liu Song; both players who had qualified for the main draw by finishing in second place in their respective groups. ....
