Ma Long Emulates Guo Yan to Create History in Macau

History was made when Ma Long won the final point against his compatriot Xu Xin, to secure the Menís Singles title at the ITTF Pro Tour Grand Finals in Macau on Sunday 10th January 2010.

Earlier in the evening, Guo Yan had won the Womenís Singles crown and in so doing retained her title

In December 2008, Ma Long had been in devastating form to win the Menís Singles crown.

If he could beat Xu Xin, not only would he retain his title but for the first time in the 14 year history of the ITTF Pro Tour Grand Finals, both Menís and Womenís Singles titles would be retained.....

Chinaís 27 year old Guo Yan, in the most dramatic of circumstances, won the Womenís Singles title at the ITTF Pro Tour Grand Finals in Macau, on Sunday 10th January 2010 beating 19 year old compatriot Ding Ning by the very narrowest of margins in a nail-biting seventh game.

The contest kept the 1,500 strong crowd totally enthralled, as Guo Yan became only the second player in the 14 year history of the competition to retain the Womenís Singles crown; the one other player being Guo Yanís Beijing city colleague, Zhang Yining.....

A contest of the very highest calibre, full of athletic electrifying rallies it was the Young Pretender who defeated the living legend to reach the gold medal contest.

Chinaís 21 year old Ma Long, the defending champion and the no.1 seed, booked his place in the Menís Singles final at the ITTF Pro Tour Grand Finals in Macau, by overcoming a determined compatriot in the guise of Zhang Jike at the semi-final stage on the afternoon of Sunday 10th January 2010.

However, Ma Long was tested by Zhang Jike. He had to recover from a two games to nil deficit to secure victory.

In trademark style, his power to the for, Ma Long won 3-11, 10-12, 11-6, 11-5, 11-3, 11-8.

Chinaís 18 year old Ding Ning, playing in her first ever ITTF Pro Tour Grand Finals, overcame Singaporeís Feng Tianwei at the semi-final stage of the Womenís Singles event on Sunday 11th January 2010 to book her place in the final.

In a scintillating contest which kept the 1,500 strong crowd thoroughly absorbed, Ding Ning secured victory in a contest that went the full seven games.

She won 11-1, 6-11, 4-11, 11-2, 9-11, 11-9, 11-8.....
