Sport relies heavily on those people who give their time freely for the good of their chosen discipline, table tennis is no exception and such people are especially important in the world’s smaller associations.

Such a person is Joe Borg Cardona, he has been the backbone of table tennis in the small Mediterranean island of Malta since time in memoriam and on the morning of Monday 16th March 2009 he can reflect in his bank manager’s seat on a job well done.

Conspicuous in Cospicua, Hampus Soderlund the Star Performer

Sweden’s 15 year old Hampus Soderlund was without any doubt whatsoever, the star performer at the Malta Junior Open, which concluded in Cospicua on Sunday 15th March 2009.

He won both the Boys’ Singles and Cadet Boys’ Singles title.

Seeded no.2 in the Boys’ Singles event, he overcame Marios Yiangou of Cyprus, seeded no.1, to secure gold; whilst in the Cadet Boys’ Singles final, the player to suffer at the hands of the rapidly improving Swede was Tunisia’s Adem Hmam.....

Magdalena Szczerkowsa Thwarts Romanian Hopes to Clinch Gold

Poland’s 16 year old Magdalena Szczerkowsa staved off strong Romania opposition, to win the Girls’ Singles event at the Malta Junior Open in Cospicua on Sunday 15th March 2009, the fifth ITTF Junior Circuit tournament of the year.

Seeded no.3, she beat Romania’s Camelia Postoaca in the final in four straight games having ousted the latter’s compatriots Anamaria Sebe, seeded no.6 and Cristina Hirici, seeded no.1, in the quarter and semi-finals respectively.

Seeds Progress in Style at Malta Junior Open

The top eight seeded players in the Boys’ Singles event at the Malta Junior Open in Cospicua, all emerged successful in the qualification group stage of proceedings on Saturday 14th March 2009.

All concluded their programme of matches, on the third day of play in the east coast town just south of the capital Valletta, in first place in their group contests.

Untroubled Day for Girls’ Singles Title Aspirants

It was a relatively untroubled day for the leading eight seeded players in the Girls’ Singles event at the Malta Junior Open in Cospicua on Saturday 14th March 2009.

Eight groups in the initial stage of the competition; the favourites were in quite devastating form; none required a deciding fifth game to secure victory.

The Romanian quartet of Cristina Hirici, Camelia Postoaca, Bernadette Szocs and Anamaria Sebe took no prisoners. ....

Romania Dominant in Girls’ Team Event

Romania dominated proceedings in the Girls’ Team event at the Malta Junior Open in Cospicua on Friday 13th March 2009.

Camelia Postoaca and Bernadette Szocs, representing Romania `A’, finished in first place followed by colleagues Cristina Hirici and Anamaria Sebe.

Third place went to Poland’s Klaudia Kusinska and Magdalena Szczerkowska with Spain’s Paula Bueno and Marta de La Vega in fourth spot followed by Tunisia’s Hayet Gara and Maroua Ridan.

Unusual Combination of Countries Secures Maltese Gold

In what must be a first for either the ITTF Pro Tour or ITTF Junior Circuit, and possibly for any international tournament since time in memoriam, a partnership comprising a New Zealander and a Swede captured top honours in table tennis team event.

The pairing in question is New Zealand’s Phillip Xiao and Sweden’s Hampus Soderlund. They joined forces to win the Boys’ Team event at the Malta Junior Open in Cospicua on Friday 13th March 2009 beating Spain’s Alvaro Robles and Ferran Brugada ....
