The H.I.S. 2009 World Table Tennis Championships in Yokohama from 28th April to 5th May brought record numbers in terms of web traffic, and among the sports federations of the Olympic movement, www.ittf.com is ranked number two.....

Wang Hao for the First, Zhang Yining for the Second Time

China’s WANG Hao won the title in the Men’s Singles event at the H.I.S. 2009 World Table Tennis Championships in Yokohama, Japan. The 25 year old finally won his first “big” title in a Singles event. The current world number one has won the last two World Cups but failed to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games in Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 as well as at World Championships.

GUO Yue and LI Xiaoxia are the new World champions in the Women’s Doubles. The world numbers 2 and 3 were the favourites and prevailed relatively clear in front of 11,236 spectators in 5 games against their compatriots DING Ning/GUO Yan. ....

Sadness and happiness for the host nation within a few moments: Ai FUKUAHRA and Sayaka HIRANO lost their quarter-final match in the Women’s Doubles at the H.I.S. 2009 World Championships against the Chinese top seeds GUO Yue/LI Xiaoxia and were inconsolable. However, the next match on the same table brought the much longed release for Japan.....

ITTF President Salutes China and Japan as Curtain Closes in Yokohama

The medallists paraded in the Yokohama Arena to bring the H.I.S. World Championships to a close on Tuesday 5th May 2009.

One colour prevailed, it was the colour of red, the colour of the Chinese national team tracksuit; of the 20 medals available; they had secured a staggering 17 and had won all those which were coloured silver and gold.

It was a fact that was acknowledged by Adham Sharara, ITTF President, in his closing speech; once again the Chinese had been superb, in a class of their very own.....

Proud City, Changchun Celebrates, their Favourite Son is World Champion

In September 2004 at the Volkswagen Open China, in the northern Chinese city of Changchun, the banner read “Wang Hao, we are proud of you”; the reference was to the fact that one month earlier he had suffered agonies, losing to Korea’s Ryu Seung Min in the Men’s Singles final at the Athens Olympic Games.

Four years later at the Beijing Olympics, the silver medal was again his lot but on Tuesday 5th May 2009, the best man became the groom.

In four straight games, in the final of the Men’s Singles event at the H.I.S. World Championships in the Japanese city of Yokohama, Wang Hao was crowned World champion.....

Zhang Yining Regains Title in Yokohama, Surrendered in Zagreb

China’s Zhang Yining regained her Women’s Singles title on Tuesday 5th May 2009 by beating national team colleague, Guo Yue, in a contest where she recovered from a two games to nil deficit to secure victory.

Guo Yue started in the fast lane, her speed proving the telling factor but from the third game onwards, Zhang Yining gradually assumed control.

Zhang Yining won 10-12, 3-11, 11-2, 11-7, 11-7, 11-9.....
