The fourth day of play, Saturday 1st November 2008, at the Erke Austrian Open in Salzburg ended in sheer delight for the host nation; the Men’s Team trio of Werner Schlager, Chen Weixing and Robert Gardos delivered the goods.
Deliver the goods they did and they delivered the goods in style. They beat Japan by three-nil to secure the top prize.
Austria justified their top seeded position and responded to the pressure situation of playing on home soil and being expected to finish proceedings on the top step of the medal podium. |

Defensive Skills Cause Downfall of Second Seed at Erke Austrian Open |

2008
ERKE Austrian Open
Lie Jie of the Netherlands was the player to cause the major surprise at the quarter-final stage of the Women’s Singles event at the Erke Austrian Open in Salzburg on Saturday 1st November 2008.
Seeded no.7 she beat the no.2 seed, the host nation’s Liu Jia in five games to book her place in the semi-finals.
An unexpected result on paper but in reality not too unexpected; Liu Jia is not the most confident player against the backspin artist and Li Jie is very consistent in that department.
