Higher Places for the Medallists on South America Stage of ITTF Pro Tour

The successful players at the Liebherr Brazilian Open and the Liebherr Chile Open all make progress on the latest ITTF Pro Tour Standings, as the race for a place in the prestigious end of year Volkswagen Pro Tour Grand Finals, to be staged in Beijing from 13th to 16th December 2007, becomes increasingly intense.

Japan’s Kan Yo, the winner in both Belo Horizonte and Santiago, moves into fifth spot on the Men’ Singles Standings, whilst Hong Kong’s Tie Yana, the champion in Brazil, is also in fifth place; colleague Jiang Huajun who succeeded in Chile, one place higher.

Victory in Belo Horizonte, Now Success for Kan Yo in Santiago

Japan’s Kan Yo repeated the success he had enjoyed one week earlier at the Liebherr Brazilian Open when in Santiago on Sunday 22nd April he won the Men’s Singles title at the Liebherr Chile Open, in what was arguably the best final ever seen in the four year history of the ITTF Pro Tour in the South American country.

Kan Yo won 11-6, 11-8, 11-9, 3-11, 11-13, 3-11, 11-8.

It was the first time the two players had met in a World Ranking event and for Tang Peng it was his first ever Men’s Singles final on the ITTF Pro Tour.

Jiang Huajun Powers her Way to the Women’s Singles Crown in Santiago

Hong Kong’s Jiang Huajun won the Women’s Singles title at the Liebherr Chile Open in Santiago on Sunday 22nd April 2007 beating Japan’s Sayaka Hirano at the final hurdle.

Jiang Huajun won 11-8, 15-13, 11-7, 11-5.

It was the first time the two had met at a World Ranking event and for Jiang Huajun it was her second career ITTF Pro Tour Women’s Doubles crown; the previous success was in 2005 at the Salwa Cup Kuwait Open.

Ko Lai Chak and Li Ching Succeed in Chile to Win Seventh Crown

Hong Kong’s Ko Lai Chak and Li Ching won the Men’s Doubles title at the Liebherr Chile Open in Santiago on Sunday 22nd April 2007 beating top seeds, Gao Ning and Yang Zi of Singapore in the final.

They won 7-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-9, 9-11, 11-6.

It was their first Men’s Doubles title on the ITTF Pro Tour since they gained success in June 2005 at the TMS Chinese Taipei Open; in career terms it was their seventh ITTF Pro Tour Men’s Doubles crown.

Tie Yana and Zhang Rui Repeat Brazilian Success to Win for a Tenth Time

Tie Yana and Zhang Rui, the top seeds in the Women’s Doubles event at the Liebherr Chile Open in Santiago faced their colleagues, Jiang Huajun and Lin Ling in the final on Sunday 22nd April 2007.

Eight days earlier the two pairs had met on the ITTF Pro Tour at the Liebherr Brazilian Open in Belo Horizonte when in seven games Tie Yana and Zhang Rui had succeeded at the quarter-final stage.

In Santiago they won in six games to record their tenth Women’s Doubles success on the ITTF Pro Tour; they succeeded 11-6, 11-8, 8-11, 11-7, 5-11, 11-8.

An Earthquake in Santiago but Nothing ShakesTang Peng

An earthquake at 6.05am on Sunday 22nd April 2007 had shaken the Chilean city of Santiago; the epicentre being some two hundred and forty kilometres (one hundred and fifty miles) away from the host city of the Liebherr Chile Open Table Tennis Championships.

The shock measured a magnitude of 4.9 but nothing was to going to disturb the resolute Tang Peng; in his first ever appearance in a Men’s Singles semi-final on the ITTF Pro Tour he beat his Hong Kong colleague, Jiang Tianyi, at the penultimate stage in four straight games.

Kan Yo Reaches Second Consecutive Men’s Singles Final on ITTF Pro Tour

Japan’s Kan Yo overcame Singapore’s Yang Zi on the morning of Sunday 22nd April 2007 to reach the final of a Men’s Singles event on the ITTF Pro Tour for the second consecutive week.

In Belo Horizonte he progressed to the final at the Liebherr Brazilian Open, in Santiago he did the same at the Liebherr Chile Ope.

He beat Yang Zi in six games winning 9-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-5.
