China Completes Programme with Six Gold Medals at the Asian Games in Doha


Guo Yue in determined mood in Doha


The final day of play, Thursday 7th December 2006, in the table tennis events at the 15th Asian Games in Doha brought further success for China.

Ma Lin and Wang Nan won the Mixed Doubles, Guo Yue secured the Women’s Singles crown and Wang Hao was crowned Men’s Singles champion.

The Olympic Games in Athens in August 2004 saw China’s Chen Qi and Ma Lin clinch gold by beating Hong Kong’s Ko Lai Chak and Li Ching in the Men’s Doubles final; in Doha on Wednesday 6th December 2006; that decision was reversed.

Meanwhile, in the final of the Women's Doubles it was success for Guo Yue and Li Xiaoxia, they beat Tie Yana and Zhang Rui in the final.

Throughout her illustrious career, China’s Wang Nan has extricated herself time and again from almost impossible situations; becoming the stronger adversary as the contest progressed. In the semi-finals of the Women’s Singles event in the table tennis competition at the 15th Asian Games in Doha on Wednesday 6th December 2006 we waited for this to happen.

It didn’t; the top seed in the Women’s Singles event suffered defeat. She lost at the semi-final final stage to Hong Kong’s Tie Yana.

The brightest smile in Doha on Tuesday 5th December 2006 was that on the face of Korea’s twenty year old Lee Eun Hee; the reason was twofold.

She was assured of a medal in the Mixed Doubles event; with Lee Jung Woo she had caused the biggest surprise to date in the table tennis competition at the 15th Asian Games.

On Tuesday 5th December 2006, China’s leading men duly assured themselves of further medals in the table tennis events at the 15th Asian Games in Doha.

The top seeds in both the Men’s Singles and Men’s Doubles events, they booked themselves places in the semi-finals of both competitions.

Drama Left to the Very Last Match as Singapore Pairing Progress One Step Further


Success for Seiya Kishikawa in the Men's Doubles with Jun Mizutani but not in the Mixed Doubles


The very last match on the fifth day of play in the table tennis events at the 15th Asian Games in Doha produced the closest contest of the day. The highest moment of tension was saved to the very end as the Singapore duo of Yang Zi and Li Jia Wei recovered from a 6-9 deficit in the decisive fifth game against Japan’s Seiya Kishikawa and Ai Fujinuma to clinch victory.

They won five points in a row to win the match 11-7, 10-12, 11-9, 7-11, 11-9.
