In the morning session both players had been below their best; in the afternoon session the crowd was treated to a seven games duel with Vladimir Samsonov saving one match point in the sixth game before succumbing in the seventh.

“This morning, I play very badly, this afternoon it was better”, said Wang Liqin. I won but I didn’t at play my best level; I’m satisfied because we’ve taken the first three places.”

He has won the Men’s Singles title at the ITTF Pro Tour Grand Finals and at the World Championships but he must now wait another year for a chance to capture the prestigious Men’s World Cup crown.
