Medals as seeding predicted; the combination of India’s Mudit Dani and Shivansh Kumar of the United States, the top seeds, secured gold in the Cadet Boys’ Team event at the 2014 Guatemala Junior and Cadet Open on Thursday 7th August.

Silver went the way of Sweden ‘A’ represented by William Apelqvist and Oskar Danielsson, the second seeds, with the third and fourth seeded outfits securing the bronze medal positions.

It was the third step of the podium for the Colombian pairing of Santiago Gonzalez and Hernando Franco, as it was for Guatemala’s Handel Saguil and Misael Morales.

Mainstay of Success
Architect of the victory for the combination of India and the United States was Shivansh Kumar. He remained unbeaten throughout the whole event.

A perfect record on the first day in the group stage of affairs; one day later it was more of the same. In the semi-final contest against Colombia he beat both Hernando Franco (12-10, 14-12, 8-11, 11-5) and Santiago Gonzalez (11-7, 11-7, 5-11, 18-16) in the three matches to two victory; before in opposition to Sweden ‘A’ repeating the success.

In the final, a three-one win was the end result with Shivansh Kumar beating Oskar Danielsson (7-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-8) and William Apelqvist (10-12, 11-5, 11-5, 11-4), whilst teaming with Mudit Dani to secure the doubles (11-6, 11-9, 11-6).

The one further win for the champions elect against Colombia was secured by Mudit Dani in the vital fifth match of the fixture; he overcame Hernando Franco in four games (11-9, 11-5, 8-11, 11-1).

Wins for Colombia and Sweden
Success for Colombia in the semi-final encounter came from Santiago Gonzalez against Mudit Dani in the opening contest (5-11, 13-11, 9-11, 11-4, 12-10) and in the doubles when Santiago Gonzalez and Hernando Franco recorded a five games win against Mudit Dani and Shivanash Kumar (6-11, 11-7, 11-8, 5-11, 11-7).

The one success in the final for Sweden came from William Apelqvist; in the second match of the engagement, he defeated Mudit Dani (5-11, 16-14, 11-7, 11-9).

Surprise Finalista
No surprises in the Cadet Boys’ Team event but that was not the situation in the Cadet Boys’ Doubles competition where Colombia’s Hernando Franco and Santiago Gonzalez, the sixth seeds, beat Guatemala’s Misael Morales and Handel Saguil, the third seeds, in the final (11-8, 11-5, 11-2).

At the semi-final stage Hernando Franco and Santiago Gonzalez had caused a major upset by overcoming Mudit Dani and Shivanash Kumar, the top seeds (5-11, 11-8, 11-3, 8-11, 11-6), after having recorded a quarter-final success against Trinidad and Tobago’s Benjamin Dylan Lee and Luc Francoi Xavier O’Young, the fourth seeds (11-6, 11-9, 11-4).

Similarly, Misael Morales and Handel Saguil caused an upset on road to the final. They ousted Sweden’s William Apelqvist and Oskar Danielsson, the second seeds, in the penultimate round (7-11, 14-12, 11-8, 7-11, 11-6).

Top Two Seeds Reach Final
Meanwhile, in the Cadet Girls’ Doubles event, the top two seeds reached the final but it was the second seeds who prevailed.

The host nation’s Lucia Cordero and Dulce Rivera accounted for the combination of Chinese Taipei’s Chen Ting-Ting and Shreya Maharaj of Trinidad and Tobago to secure the top prize (11-6, 6-11, 7-11, 11-3, 11-5).

At the semi-final stage Lucia Cordero and Dulce Rivera beat Guatemala’s Jassmin Mills and Karoline Trujillo (11-6, 11-5, 11-6); whilst Chen Ting-Ting and Shreya Maharaj also accounted for a Guatemalan pairing (11-5, 11-6, 9-11, 11-7).

Second Title
Success for Lucia Cordero and Dulce Rivera meant they added to the success of one day earlier; on the opening day of action, they won the Cadet Girls’ Team title.
