08/12/2012        2012 Guatemala Junior & Cadet Open - ITTF Junior Circuit

Not seeded in either the Junior Girls’ or the Cadet Girls’ Singles events, India’s 13 year old Priyadarshini Das was the player to attract the attention, as she caused upset after upset on Saturday 11th August 2012, at the Guatemala Junior and Cadet Open.

In the Junior Girls’ Singles event she beat the Dominican Republic’s Eva Brito, the no.4 seed (11-6, 16-18, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9); whilst in the Cadet Girls’ Singles competition, she overcame the host nation’s Caterine Agustin, the no.7 seed (11-4, 11-5, 11-5).

The successes meant she finished unbeaten and thus secured the all important first place in each group.

Series of Wins
In addition to the win over Eva Brito in the Junior Girls’ Singles event, she accounted for Anthonette Riley of Barbados (11-3, 11-4, 11-3) and Guatemala’s Dulce Rivera (4-11, 12-14, 11-4, 11-5, 11-6).

It was a performance she replicated in the Cadet Girls’ Singles competition.
In addition to her success over Caterine Agustin, she accounted for Mexico’s Samantha Pio (11-7, 11-6, 11-3) and Guatemala’s Nancy Hernandez (11-3, 11-2, 11-5).

Hopes Alive for Eva Brito
A defeat for Eva Brito but there was consolation; she finished in second place in the group recording wins over Dulce Rivera (11-9, 13-11, 11-7) and Anthonette Riley (11-2, 11-8, 11-3).

Players finishing in first and second places in each group progress to the main draw; thus hopes of a podium finish remain alive for Eva Brito.

Alas for Caterin Agustin that is not the situation.

Third Place in Group
She finished in third place in her group; she beat Nancy Hernandez (11-6, 11-6, 11-3) but experienced defeat at the hands of Samantha Pio (11-9, 5-11, 10-12, 11-9, 11-9).

Samantha Pio by virtue of her success against Nancy Hernandez (11-2, 11-8, 16-14) finished in second place in the group behind the unbeaten Priyadarshini Das.

Problems for Seeds
Problems for the fourth seed in the Junior Girls’ Singles event and there were problems for two further highly seeded players.

Guatemala’s Mabelyn Enriquez, the no.5 seed, had to settle for second place in her group. She beat Puerto Rico’s Nicole Torres (11-5, 11-7, 11-3) and Mexico’s Samantha Pio (11-5, 11-6, 11-5) but suffered defeat against Ishana Deb from the United States who earlier had been beaten in five games by Nicole Torres (11-6, 8-11, 6-11, 11-9, 11-6).

Nicole Torres beat Samantha Pio (11-8, 11-9, 10-12, 11-6),as did as did Ishana Deb (11-6, 11-9, 11-6); thus games ratio was needed to separated Mabelyn Enriquez, Nicole Torres and Ishana Deb.

First place went to Ishana Deb with Mabelyn Enriquez in second place and Nicole Torres third.

Similar Scenario
Second place in the group for the sixth seed in the Junior Girls’ Singles event and it was the same for the seventh seed.

Puerto Rico’s Daniely Rios was beaten by Venezuela’s Josmary Lucena (11-9, 9-11, 7-11, 13-11, 11-9) but that was her only defeat. She recovered to defeat Guatemala’s Keila Ramirez (11-2, 11-6, 11-4) and Trinidad and Tobago’s Renuka Sitram (11-6, 11-9, 11-7), to secure second place in the group.

Josmary Lucena finished in first place in the group; she beat Renuka Sitram (8-11, 11-4, 11-3, 11-6) and Keila Ramirez (11-5, 11-6, 11-9).

Leading Names Advance
Otherwise in the first stage of the Junior Girls’ Singles event, the leading names emerged successful.

The top three seeds, Puerto Rico’s Carelyn Cordero, Sweden’s Linda Bergström and Venezuela’s Gremlis Arvelo all finished in first place in their respective groups, as did fifth seed, Maria Engelson from Sweden and Uruguay’s eighth seeded Maria-Pia Lorenzotti.

Second Indian in Form
Meanwhile, in the Cadet Girls’ Singles event; in addition to Priyadarshini Das, there was a second Indian player in form and upsetting the seeding.

Sagarika Mukherjee finished in first place in her group, causing an upset in the opening match.

She beat Venezuela’s Josmary Lucena, the no.6 seed (11-4, 11-8, 11-6) before overcoming Ecuador’s Nikole Maldonado (11-4, 11-9, 11-4) and Guatemala’s Mechael Norales (11-3, 11-2, 11-3).

Second Place Clinched
However, the defeat sustained by Josmary Lucena has not totally dashed her hopes.

She finished in second place in the group and thus progresses to the main draw; the Venezuelan beat Mechael Norales (12-10, 11-5, 11-9) and Nikole Maldonado (11-8, 6-11, 11-9, 11-5).

Impressive Cuban
A fine performance by Sagarika Mukherjee in the group stage of the Cadet Girls’ Singles event and there was an equally fine performance from Cuba’s Idalys Lovet.

She finished in first place in her group by beating El Salvador’s Andrea Galeano, the no.8 seed (11-7, 11-8, 11-6), in addition to posting wins over Trinidad and Tobago’s Brittany Joseph (12-10, 11-9, 16-18, 11-8) and Guatemala’s Marilena Belteton (11-2, 11-5, 11-2).

Second place in the group went to Marilena Belteton; she overcame Brittany Jospeh (12-10, 8-11, 8-11, 12-10, 11-6) and Andrea Galeano (8-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-6).

Alas for Andrea Galeano, it was not her day; she finished in fourth place in the group losing to Brittany Joseph in a close five games duel (6-11, 9-11, 12-10, 11-7, 11-9).

Top Five, Top Places
Problems for the sixth seventh and eighth seeds but for the top five seeds in the first stage of the Cadet Girls’ Singles event it was first place in the group.

Chinese Taipei’s Hung Hung and Kuo Chia-Yun, the respective top two seeds duly finished in first place in their respective groups as did the next in line, India’s Ayhika Mukherjee and Sumana Saha.

Also, it was first place in the group for Venezuela’s Neridee Niño, the fifth seed but she did experience some problems.

Games Ratio Required
She needed games ratio to secure top spot; she lost to El Salvador’s Emme Areas in her opening contest (9-11, 6-11, 15-13, 11-9, 11-8) but recovered to beat Guatemala’s Dulce Rivera (12-10, 11-7, 12-10) and Puerto Rico’s Gabriela Diaz (11-5, 11-4, 11-9).

However, Gabriela Diaz beat both Dulce Rivera (2-11, 11-7, 11-5, 8-11, 11-6) and most notably Emme Areas 13-11, 11-5, 11-9). Emme Areas concluded her group matches with victory over Dulce Rivera (12-10, 11-6, 11-6); thus games ratio was needed to separate Neridee Niño, Emma Areas and Gabriela Diaz.

First place went to Neridee Niño (5:3) with Gabriela Diaz in second spot (3:3) and Emme Areas third (3:5).

Conclusion
Play concludes on Sunday 12th August 2012.
