2012 ITTF North American Cup
First place in the group stage of proceedings; later in the day those players enjoyed more success.
The protagonists, who in the first phase had remained unbeaten, maintained their form on the evening of Saturday 2nd June 2012 at the ITTF-North American Cup in the Canadian city of Mississauga.
In the Men’s Singles event Timothy Wang and Adam Hugh from the United States booked semi-final places as did the host nation’s Pierre-Luc Theriault and André Ho.
It was the same in the Women’s Singles event.
Players who had excelled in the initial stage continued their good form.
Canada’s Zhang Mo, alongside the United States trio of Ariel Hsing, Eric Wu and Judy Hugh all negotiated the round of the last eight successfully.
Closest of all the encounters was the duel between Timothy Wang, the no.1 seed and Xavier Therien, the no.4 seed, the latter having lost to Adam Hugh in the group stage had finished in second place in his group and had thus not progressed to the place allocated for a seeded players.
A full distance duel accrued with Timothy Wang gaining the verdict in seven games (10-12, 14-12, 3-11, 11-6, 11-5, 7-11, 11-9).
Success Continues for Adam Hugh
Defeat for Xavier Therien but for the man who had beaten him in the first phase of proceedings it was success.
Adam Hugh maintained his form to end the hopes of Canada’s Arnaud Roche-Nadon (11-7, 11-9, 5-11, 11-8, 11-9), a player with no World ranking who had excelled expectations to reach the second phase of proceedings.
Five Games Victories
A five games success for Adam Hugh; it was the same end result for both André Ho, the no.2 seed and Pierre-Luc Theriault, the no.3 seed.
André Ho overcame Canadian colleague James Pintea (13-11, 11-8, 11-6, 7-11, 11-8); whilst Pierre-Luc Theriault defeated Grant Li of the United States (11-13, 11-2, 14-12, 11-4, 11-2).
Fright fot Top Seed
Meanwhile, in the Women’s Singles quarter-finals there was a fright for Ariel Hsing, the no.1 seed.
She lost the first two games when facing Canada’s Sara Yuen before recovering to clinch the next four (9-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-4, 11-7, 11-6).
Surrendered Opening Game
Nervous moments for Ariel Hsing but not to the same extent for the other leading protagonists, life was less fraught.
However, both Zhang Mo, the no.2 seed and Judy Hugh the no.4 seed, did lose the first game in their encounters before recording five games wins.
Zhang Mo beat Canada’s Carmen Lee (6-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-7, 13-11); whilst Judy Hugh defeated Annie Coulombe, also from Canada (4-11, 11-8, 11-3, 11-6, 12-10).
Opening game problems from three leading ladies but not for Eric Wu, the no.3 seed; she showed no mercy, she accounted for Canada’s Stephanie Yuen in four straight games (11-7, 11-4, 11-4, 13-11).
At the semi-final stage of the Women’s Singles event Ariel Hsing faces Erica Wu, with Zhang Mo confronting Judy Hugh.
In the counterpart Men’s Singles competition, the penultimate round sees Timothy Wang play Pierre-Luc Theriault and André Ho confront Adam Hugh.
Proceedings come to a conclusion on Sunday 3rd June 2012.
