Table tennis in Latin America has reached new heights and in the next few years is destined to reach even greater heights; that is the view of Guatemala’s Miguel Angel Delgado, the former President of the Latin American Table Tennis Union.
Miguel Angel Delgado occupied the position from 1995 until 2006 and is present at the ITTF Cadet Challenge and ITTF Junior Circuit Finals on behalf of the Indian manufacturer Stag.
Throughout the current decade Stag has been a major supporter of the ITTF Development Programme and the ITTF Global Junior Programme.
It is their deep red floor mat which adorns the table tennis venue in the Puerto Rican Convention Center.
Great Pride “I’m very proud to see what is being achieved in Latin America; it’s a dream come true”, said Miguel Delgado. “I think back 15 years to when I became President of the Latin American Table Tennis Union, the progress that has been made since then is quite remarkable.”
Four World Title Events Most impressive; in the last ten years Latin America has now staged four world title events.
In 2003 Chile hosted the first ever World Junior Championships, six years later the magnificent Colombian city of Cartagena de Indias was the host.
Meanwhile in 2005 Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic was the home for the ITTF Cadet Challenge and ITTF Junior Circuit Finals. Now as for that event and for the 2009 Volkswagen World Junior Championships, the Caribbean in the guise of Puerto Rico, is the place where the youth of the world congregates.
Member of ITTF Junior Commission “Also it gives me pride that I was a member of the ITTF Junior Commission at the very start”, continued Miguel Delgado. “It’s now very satisfying to see that the ideas we had have now come to fruition; here in San Juan we see a very high level of play, top class and ready to go higher.”
Certainly in the Puerto Rico Convention Center great excitement has been witnessed.
Young People Gathered “It’s just great to see all these young people here; also for me it’s good to see that Latin America is competitive; Asia is ahead but for sure we are closer to Europe”, added Miguel Delgado. “In the Boys’ Singles event at the ITTF Cadet Challenge, there are three Asian players, the other is from Latin America, Hugo Calderano; he can be our first gold medallist; not this year but in the future.”

Delighted to be Sponsor Equally, from the perspective of Stag, Miguel Angel Delgado was more than pleased.
“We have been involved with the ITTF Global Junior Programme from the very start, we are delighted to be a sponsor”, explained Miguel Angel Delgado. “In addition to providing the floor, we support the Puerto Rico Team and the Africa Team; now I believe we are seeing everywhere better equipment and that means higher standards in every respect.”
Ever Higher Higher standards most certainly and aiming higher; that is Latin America and helping table tennis move forward globally, that is Stag.
