2010 UAE World Team Cup Classic
Staged in Dubai from Tuesday 28th September to Friday 1st October 2010, the U.A.E, World Team Cup Classic excelled in terms of television ratings and as a direct consequence in terms of media value for sponsors.
In the past, there has been a strong demand from the media to cover the event; most certainly the U.A.E. World Team Cup Classic was no exception and was a noticeable step forward.
The media value in China and Europe alone reached almost US$30 million.
In China, an audience of 123.8 million viewers tuned in to watch over 77 hours of televised broadcasts; whilst on Europsport, 29 hours were covered.
"Our broadcasters have a strong appetite for team events”, said Steve Dainton, the ITTF Marketing Director. "It is mainly due to the fact, that it is not very often there is the opportunity see important team events; so when their is the opportunity they jump at it!”
Arguably of all the racket sports, table tennis is the sport that lends itself the best to team events.
Value of Team Events
“Currently the only other team events are at the Olympic Games, every four years and the World Championships every second year”, continued Steve Dainton. “Accepted, it may be difficult in 2012 to find time in the calendar for the World Team Cup owing to the Olympic Games but there is no doubt results prove that the World Team Cup should have a permanent place on the ITTF Calendar in non Olympic years.”
Unquestionably, there is a strong argument for such a proposal; at the recent Asian Games, crowds of 10,000 were present in he Guangzhou Gymnasium for the finals of the table tennis team events and of course national television plus other networks in Asia, gave the event prominent coverage.
