Africa Celebrates Intercontinental Cup Success
Nigeria and Congo Brazzaville emerged as the winners of the respective Men’s and Women’s Team titles at the Intercontinental Cup in Dubai on Wednesday 29th September 2010 to bring joy to Africa.
Represented by YANG Fen, HAN Xing and Onyinyechi NWACHUKWU; Congo Brazzaville recorded victories over the United States of America (GAO Jun, Lily ZHANG, Erica WU) and Brazil (Ligia SILVA, Jessica YAMADA, Mariany NONAKA) to secure the title.
Meanwhile, in the Men’s Team event Nigeria, with Quadri ARUNA, Seun AJETUNMOBI and Olanrewaju JEGEDE in action, defeated the United Arab Emirates outfit of Rashid OMAR, Jassem LINJAWI and Mohamed ALBAHAR, before defeating the Canadian team of Pradeeban PETER-PAUL, Pierre-Luc HINSE and Xavier THERIEN in the final.
It was a duel in which the Nigerians voted for experience; Quadri ARUNA retained his place in the team but seasoned internationals, Monday MEROTOHUN and Kazeem NOSIRU replaced their younger colleagues Seun AJETUNMOBI and Olanrewaju JEGEDE.
Success in the Intercontinental Cup meant a place in the quarter-finals of the U.A.E. World Team Cup and for both it was an immediate exit.
Fielding the team that had beaten Canada, Nigeria suffered against the German team of Patrick BAUM, Zoltan FEJER-KONNERTH and Steffen MENGEL; whilst Congo Brazzaville, with Roseline Yako replacing Onyinyechi NWACHUKWU, departed at the hands of Korea’s KIM Kyung Ah, PARK Mi Young and SEOK Ha Jung.
Victory for Germany in their quarter-final duel and there were also wins in the round of the last eight for neighbours Austria and Korea.
Wins for Werner SCHLAGER over both TANG Peng and CHEUNG Yuk, after Daniel HABESOHN had sensationally beaten LI Ching in the opening duel, paved the way for an Austrian victory over Hong Kong China.
Meanwhile, the Korean outfit of LEE Jung Woo, JUNG Young Sik and OH Sang Eun imposed their authority on matters to defeat the Brazilian trio of Gustavo TSUBOI, Hugo HOYAMA and Cazuo MATSUMOTO.
At the semi-final stage of the Men’s Team event, Austria meets China, whilst Korea confronts Germany; in the Women’s Team competition China opposes Korea with Japan challenging World champions Singapore.
