Top seeds and the pair who finished the year in first place on the ITTF Pro Tour Women’s Doubles Standings, Singapore’s Li Jia Wei and Sun Bei Bei confirmed their pedigree as a world class pairing by emerging successful at the Volkswagen Pro Tour Grand Finals in Macau on the evening of Sunday 14th December 2008.

In the final of the Women’s Doubles event they beat the Koreans Kim Kyung Ah and Park Young to capture gold. The Singaporeans won 11-5, 6-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-4.

It was a victory that defied history.

Past ITTF Pro Tour Record
History favoured Kim Kyung Ah and Park Mi Young; they had prevailed on both previous occasions that the pairs had met on the ITTF Pro Tour.

In June 2007 they overcame the Singaporeans at the quarter-final stage of the Women’s Doubles event at the Volkswagen Open Japan, winning in four straight games whilst earlier in 2008 they had prevailed in the final at the Brazilian Open in Belo Horizonte.

However, on that occasion it was a closer contest. The Koreans won in six games.

The past record showed that the Singaporeans were improving against defensive techniques and certainly Sun Bei Bei had shown improvement against that style of play.

In the Women’s Singles event she had overcome the stylish Polish defender Li Qian in the opening round so that was a confidence booster.

Attacking the body of the Koreans was the effective tactic and being patient was the essential mental attribute; they succeeded in both areas.

Furthermore, when the Koreans attacked they made errors and as the match progressed belief blossomed in the hearts of the Singaporeans.

All Smiles
They reversed previous verdicts, emerged as champions and departed Macau with bright smiles beaming across their perspiration ridden faces.

It was success for Singapore, success for Li Jia Wei and Sun Bei Bei.
