Thursday 23rd June 2005 Liebherr Brazilian Open Press Release: Europe Provides Top Seeds
Europe Provides Top Seeds Belgium’s Jean-Michel SAIVE and Croatia’s Tamara BOROS are the top seeds in the Men’s and Women’s Singles events respectively at the Liebherr Brazilian Open in Rio de Janeiro; the sixth ITTF Pro Tour tournament of 2005.
In the Men’s Singles, SAIVE is scheduled to meet the number four seed, Zoran PRIMORAC of Croatia, in the semi-finals whilst in the lower half of the draw the number two seed, Russia’s Alexei SMIRNOV could well meet number three seed, Adrian CRISAN of Romania, at the penultimate stage.
However, there are several players in the Men’s Singles event who have enjoyed success on the ITTF Pro Tour and could well upset the seeding. Germany’s Peter FRANZ, who won the Men’s Doubles title with Jens LUNDQVIST at the Brazilian Open in 2004, is the potential second round opponent for Jean-Michel SAIVE whilst at the quarter-final stage; the Belgian’s seeded adversary is Russia’s Fedor KUZMIN, the winner of the Men’s Singles title at the Liebherr Slovenian Open in January 2005. Meanwhile, Zoran PRIMORAC could well face Germany’s Jörg ROSSKOPF in the quarters, the European champion in 1992 and the winner of the Men’s World Cup in 1998 but somewhat surprisingly has never won a Men’s Singles title on the ITTF Pro Tour.
In the Women’s Singles, Croatia’s Tamara BOROS will be seeking to conclude the tournament one place higher than twelve months ago when she finished in runners up spot, losing in the final to Austria’s LIU Jia. The latter is seeded number two and should matters go according to plan then the two will meet in the final but both have to overcome tough opposition if they are meet in Rio de Janeiro once again.
KIM Kyung Ha, a fast attacking left hander is a potential opponent for BOROS in the quarter-finals whilst another Korea, KIM Kyung Ah; the winner of the recent Volkswagen Open Korea and number three seed in Rio de Janeiro is the scheduled penultimate round adversary for the Croatian. KIM Kyung Ah is a superb defensive player whilst another defensive player, Viktoria PAVLOVICH of Belarus could have a major influence on proceedings. She is seeded number four and is scheduled to meet LIU Jia in the semi-finals -30-
The Liebherr Brazilian Open is being staged in Rio de Janeiro from Thursday 23rd June to Sunday 26th June 2005
