One more title to MA

Ma Lin, Korea Open Champion
Lausanne, Switzerland, 7 September 2003. The young Chinese CHEN Qi had to settle with “only” one Korea Open title – the one he won in Men’s Doubles. In the Men’s Singles final he lost to compatriot and top seed MA Lin.

However considering that CHEN Qi is unranked, only 19 and at his first Pro Tour event, one doubles title and a place in the singles final, should be more than acceptable.

CHEN actually had his chances in the final, but the experience of MA Lin seemed to make the difference. CHEN Qi took the lead 2-0, but slowly MA Lin took control and he won 4 games in a row to deny his young compatriot the title.

Guo stopped Liu

Guo Yan (CHN)
Lausanne, Switzerland, 7 September 2003. Young Austrian LIU Jia couldn’t go all the way in Women’s Singles at the Volkswagen Korea Open – she had to surrender to GUO Yan (CHN) in the final.

LIU Jia had beaten several World top players on her way to the final, but against GUO Yan she wasn’t even close.

Lausanne, Switzerland, 7 September 2003. Young Chinese CHEN Qi on Sunday took a title at his first Pro Tour event ever. In Men’s Doubles, together with compatriot MA Lin, he beat the Hong Kong pair KO Lai Chak/LI Ching. After a short break CHEN will find his doubles partner MA Lin at the other end of the table – playing the final in the Men’s Singles.

New Chinese star

Chen Qi (CHN)
Lausanne, Switzerland, 7 September 2003. Last year young Chinese WANG Hao suddenly “popped up” to win the Men’s Singles at the Egypt Open 2002, though still only a junior. Now he is in the top 10 in the World.

This year’s “new Chinese invention” seems to be CHEN Qi who – though unranked and only 20 – is now in two Pro Tour finals at the Volkswagen Korea Open on Sunday.
