Zagreb 18 March 2001. The Chinese didn’t send their best female players to the Croatian Open but in spite of this the final in women’s singles was a Chinese matter.  

And perhaps GUO Yan and LI Nan were fighting for the right to go with the Chinese team to the World Championships in Osaka in April. Anyway nothing was given away in a final full of good table tennis with long rallies.

GUO Yan took a lead in the 1^st game, but LI Nan caught her at 17-17. GUO though stayed cool, took the 1^st game and also won the 2^nd.

It looked like an easy win, but LI Nan came back in the 3^rd. In the long run eventually LI Nan couldn’t resist Guo Yan’s powerful and well placed topspin forehand. The lowest World ranked, GUO Yan (48), beat LI Nan (15) 3-1 to take the Croatian title and the first prize of 10.000 US Dollars.
