ONE MORE EUROPEAN

The women’s singles at the Grand Finals will be dominated by the Asians but Victoria PAVLOVICH earned her ticket to China at the last moment – as the 3rd European. PAVLOVICH has been constantly improving during 2001 and in Sweden and Denmark she earned the points necessary to qualify.
She pushed another European Jie SCHOPP out in the cold. Beside PAVLOVICH there are only LIU Jia (AUT) and Tamara BOROS (CRO) coming from Europe. The rest of the field is Asian, dominated by China and Korea – both countries have 4 players in.

ZHANG Yining (CHN) did not go to the last 2 Pro Tour events in Scandinavia and she ended up as nr. 19 on the list – the World’s nr. 2 and the winner of the Grand Finals 2000 is not qualified for Tianjin.
In Women’s Doubles RYU Ji Hye (KOR) actually qualified twice. She is nr. 2 with KIM Moo Kyo – and nr. 4 with LEE Eun Sil. She goes to Tianjin playing in the highest ranked doubles pair with KIM – which means that LEE Eun Sil has to stay at home. This also means that nr. 9 Ai FUJINUMA/Reiko HIURA (JPN) will be invited.

LEE Eun Sil though from another point of view could be called the doubles player of the year.  She is on the top 20 in the Pro Tour Standings with  3 different partners. As mentioned she is nr. 4 with RYU Ji Hye, she is nr. 10 with SUK Eun Mi and nr. 19 with SHIN Soo Hee.
