  • Umpire pre match procedure: When all players arrive to table, the umpire begins pre match procedure.
  • Umpire action:
    1. Inspect the rackets.
    2. Check the legality of rubber on each striking surface and acceptable tolerances within the surface of the blade. If unsure about an unfamiliar brand, consult the latest list of authorized rubbers (available from the Referee or through the ITTF web site). Ask players to make appropriate adjustments (cut overly extended rubber) to conform to acceptable tolerances. If a player objects, consult with the Referee. Consult with the Referee on any major variance that a player cannot or refuses to correct.
    3. Check the player numbers (if used in the event).
    4. Toss for serve, receive or choice of ends.
    5. Ask the winner of the toss to make the first selection.
    6. Ask the loser of the toss to make the remaining selection.
    7. Provide the game ball.
    8. Start the clock and time the warm-up period.
    9. Update the match card with the first server and starting end as well as first receiver in doubles.
    10. If required by the Referee, 30 seconds before the end of the warm up period, begin pre match announcements.
    11. Start the match on time.
Consult the ITTF handbook for match officials for more detailed description of umpire pre match procedures.
