FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

WELCOME

The joint Congresses of The International Table Tennis Federation and The World Commission of Sports Science (Racket Sports) will be held at INSEP (National Institute of Sport), Paris.   The meeting will begin on Saturday morning 17th May and end on Monday afternoon on the 19th May, 2003.

Racket sports are attractive at both the competitive and recreational level but  pose many challenges due to the physical demands of performance as well as the injuries that can occur to participants. Because of these challenges, racket sports are of great interest to sports scientists, physicians, therapists, athletic trainers, and strength and conditioning coaches.

Also of interest to racket sports is the effect of equipment design, playing surfaces, shoes and other interfaces between the player and the game.  With new technology, sports evolve in new and different ways, perhaps requiring different training methods, and perhaps causing different injuries.

This Congresses will be run jointly and are organized under the auspices of the International Table Tennis Federation and the World Commission of Science and Sports (a working group of ICSSPE).  The Congresses will provide up-to-date information on current applications of sports science to the different racket sports (badminton,  table tennis, tennis, squash and other racket games), together with the opportunity to share ideas across disciplines in an effort to better understand the science of racket sports. Exhibitions and workshops will provide the participant an opportunity to see the practical application of ideas whenever possible.

Who should attend ?

The Congresses aim to bring together those with an interest in current developments and application of scientific principles to racket sports and will include sports scientists, researchers,  racket sport coaches, therapists, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, and others who may be interested in the science of racket sports.

Call for ABSTRACTS

Abstracts for presentation are currently being accepted.  Abstract topics are invited on any of the Congress themes or on any of the basic or applied sciences related to the science of racket sports

Abstracts should be no more than one A4 page in length (unjustified, typed in Times New Roman 12 point font, single spaced) in English.  Diagrams and references should be reduced to a minimum with full reference details given alphabetically at the end. Sample abstract layout is available of the Congress Web site.  Each submission should be original work that has not been previously published.  The scientific committee will review abstracts prior to acceptance.  They will be grouped thematically either in free communications or poster sessions, or as related to invited speaker presentations.

All accepted abstracts will be published in the conference proceedings.  Those meeting the requirements of the Journal of Sports Sciences will be published in a special issue of that journal. A second publication, either a book or papers in the Journal of Sports Science  will be published after the conference. Consequently manuscripts will be required from those presenters whose abstracts are accepted.
