The host nation to the fore, as all Cuban finals heralded the start of the fifth day of play, Saturday 22nd July, at the 59th Caribbean Region Championships in Havana but as the day progressed it was visitors to the island who gained success.

Trinidad and Tobago alongside the Dominican Republic secured titles.

Lisi Castillo and Idalys Lovat combined to win the Women’s Doubles title beating Cuban colleagues Letileidis Gonzales and Daniela Fonzeca in the final (11-6, 11-7, 12-10); soon after a similar scenario witnessed victory for Carlos Hernandez and Livan Martinez in opposition to Jorge Campos and Andy Pereira (11-9, 11-8, 11-6).

However, in the Mixed Doubles event, the host nation was not to enjoy the same level of success; the Dominican Republic stood tall.

Emil Santos and Eva Brito emerged as the winners, accounting for Andy Pereira and Idalys Lovet in the final (11-7, 11-7, 11-8), having one round earlier beaten colleagues Isaac Vila and Cinthya Sanchez in a full five games duel (9-11, 11-5, 12-10, 6-11, 11-3).

An all Dominican Republic semi-final; in the opposite half of the draw, it had been an all-Cuban affair; Andy Pereira and Idalys Lovet had accounted for Jorge Campos and Shelly Machado Fernandez (11-2, 11-4, 11-8).

Runners up spot for the host nation, it was the same as the day concluded. Trinidad and Tobago’s David Mahabir won the Men’s Singles Over 45 Years title; at the final hurdle he beat Adrian Hernandez in a hard fought full distance five games duel (11-6, 7-11, 11-5, 10-12, 11-4).

Cuba versus the Dominican Republic in the Mixed Doubles final, it is the same in the Under 21 Women’s Singles title decider but not in the corresponding Under 21 Men’s Singles competition where it is an all host nation affair. In the former, Idalys Lovet meets Esmerlyn Castro; in the latter Livan Martinez confronts Carlos Hernandez.

At the semi-final stage, Idalys Lovet beat Guyana’s Chelsea Edghill (11-6, 11-7, 8-11, 11-8); Esmerlyn Castro accounted for Shelly Machado Fernandez, like Idays Lovet from Cuba (12-10, 11-7, 11-8). Similarly, in the penultimate round of the Under 21 Men’s Singles event, Livan Martinez overcame the Dominican Republic’s Isaac Vila (13-11, 11-7, 10-12, 11-7); Carlos Hernandez ended the hopes of Puerto Rico’s Sebastian Echavarria (11-4, 8-11, 11-9, 11-13, 11-8).

Play concludes on Sunday 23rd July when the main draw of both the Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles event in addition to the Under 21 Men’s Singles and Under 21 Women’s Singles competitions will be played to conclusion.
