Gold the previous day for the Dominican Republic in the Women’s Team event at the 59th Caribbean Region Championships in Havana when beating Cuba in the final; the following day, Friday 21st July, the host nation, somewhat disappointed at having had to settle for the silver medal on home soil, responded to the reverse.

At the close of play, in the Women’s Doubles event, one fact was certain; even though the final has yet to be played, they have reserved all three steps of the podium.

At the quarter-final stage Letileidis Gonzales and Daniela Fonzeca caused a major upset by beating Eva Brito and Esmerlyn Castro (11-6, 11-9, 7-11, 5-11, 11-8), the duo having proved vital to the Dominican Republic’s Women’s Team success.

Similarly, Lisa Castillo and Idalys Lovat caused the Dominican Republic more pain; they ended the hopes of Dayhana Rojas and Cinthya Sanchez (11-2, 9-11, 11-6, 11-13, 11-6).

Defeats at Cuban hands for the Dominican Republic; in the two remaining semi-final contests it was Cuban success at Guyana’s expense. Thailis de Armas Perez and Lizdainet Rodriguez beat Chelsea Edghill and Trenace Lowe (11-13, 11-7, 11-6, 11-6); Shelly Machado Fernandez and Karla Perez Gonzalez accounted for Natalie Cummings and Priscilla Greaves (11-8, 11-9, 12-14, 11-8, 11-6).

Semi-final places secured, Letileidis Gonzales and Daniela Fonzeca duly maintained their form to reserve a final place courtesy of success against Shelly Machado Fernandez and Karla Perez Gonzalez (11-5, 11-6, 11-3); in the opposite half of the draw Lisa Castillo and Idalys Lovat overcame Thailis de Armas Perez and Lizdainet Rodriguez (11-5, 11-6, 11-3).

The final will be played on Saturday 22nd July.

Meanwhile, in the Women’s Singles event, Idalys Lovet, Shelly Machado Fernandez, Daniela Fonzeca, Lizdainet Rodriguez and Lisi Castillo all secured first places in the respective groups to fly the flag for Cuba. Similarly, for the Dominican Republic, it was top spot for Eva Brito and Esmerlyn Castro.
