A total of 64 boys and 57 girls; that is the number of players on duty at the 2017 South American Junior and Cadet Championships, proceedings commencing in Asuncion, Paraguay on Saturday 18th March; a city that is now no stranger to organising major events and is fast gaining a reputation for excellent presentation.

In early 2015, Asuncion staged the ITTF World Junior Circuit Finals, under the far sighted leadership of Benjamin Real, the President of the Paraguay Table Tennis Federation, standards were set that met the approval of all.

Now just over two years later as play commences with the team events, high standards are again evident.

High standards and very much in South America, Brazil sets the level; in Asuncion the continent’s biggest land mass is very much to the fore.

Represented by Siddharta Almeida, Carlos Ishida, Eduardo Tomoike and Luis Anjos; Brazil occupies the top seeded spot in the Junior Boys’ Team event. Likewise with Giulia Takhasahi, Livia Lima, Beatrix Kimoto and Karin Tsumura available for selection; they head the list in the Cadet Girls’ Team competition.

Meanwhile, in both the Junior Girls’ Team and Cadet Boys’ Team events, Brazil occupies the second seeded spot. In the former they choose from Alexia Nakashima, Luana Souza, Isabela Cassemi and Tamyres Fukase; in the latter from Daniel Godoi, Diogo Silva, Kenzo carmo and Andre Murchie.

Ecuador, with Nathaly Paredes, Emeley Quinllin and Viviam Ruiz on duty occupy the top seeded spot in the Junior Girls’ Team competition; in the Cadet Boys’ Team event it is the Argentine quartet of Luciano Alto, Matias Guadeloupe, Matias Velarde and Christian Aoaga who head the list.
