from the

1997 World Table Tennis Championships

in Manchester, England

APRIL 26, 1997

Dramatic development in the team events:

Belgium, in a nail biter, defeated Sweden 3-2. Noticeable was Waldner's weak form at the moment. The match was chock full of spectacular exchanges with Philippe Saive clinching the match for Belgium.

Impressive also Germany without a loss to date. In an absolutely fantastic match, Germany beat
Korea 3-0.

China is cruising through the draw with only Ding Song losing to Smrekar (SLO) and Ma Wenge to Grujic (YUG).

On the women's side Germany won its group by upsetting Hong Kong 3-2.

Interview with Anders Thunström - ITTF Marketing Director:
(this interview was given before the match Sweden-Belgium)

V&N:
Mr. Thunström, we are now 3 days into the 44th WTTC, could you give us some of your impressions to date?

Anders Thunström:
The organisers did an excellent job with playing conditions, setup, excellent TV pictures. I think the players really like to play here. With the record entry, the event has become so huge, that there will be some problems. The presentation is very good with the possible exception of some of the tables in the outside areas. The center court, however, is excellent!

V&N:
How about the organisational aspect: scheduling, information flow, etc.

Anders Thunström:
In terms of television it is very good. Information flow is poor. For spectators it is difficult to follow the matches, since no large signs indicate scores, names, etc. I also heard that the press is having problems getting results. So, there is defiitely room for improvement.

V&N:
It is early in the tournament, but do you see any interesting developments?

Anders Thunström:
So far it seems that everything is going according to form. No major upsets at this point.

V&N:
Tack så mycket!
